The used car market in India is flourishing, and it is such that you can get your hands on a vehicle which is just a few months old. And if you are lucky and find it hard in the market, you can get your hands on a car that is a few days old. All this at a price that is much lower than a new one.
Buying a used car will save your pocket by a considerable margin, but it also comes with many hidden things that need to be taken care of. A proper inspection, necessary documents, test drive and loads of other things.

Since you are putting your hard-earned money over someone's else abused car, we take you through some tips where you can choose the right vehicle for yourself!
1. The age of your vehicle
This is one of the crucial steps while looking out for a used car. It is a safer option to choose a vehicle which is not more than three years old. The prices will sit accordingly to your budget, and you may get several options to choose from. Another reason is that You, as a second owner, can still avail the extended warranty just in case the parts break down or need a replacement.
Note: You should refrain from choosing the brands or models that have been discontinued from the Indian market. If you wish to choose one, you should ensure that this model should have enough aftermarket support.
2. Where you should buy it from?
There are several options where you should buy your first new car. One is the dealer or at the broker level, where you may get limited options and the prevailing thought that will the car work or if it is too expensive and among others. Then you may have family or friends who might be selling their car, and you can directly make a deal with them. With some trust, you might get a good deal and not have to worry about the paperwork.
Now, there is an organised used car market sector like Maruti True Value, Cars 24 and more which provides you with the car according to your budget and requirement. The pricing may be a bit on a higher note, but it does come in good condition. Cars here are inspected thoroughly and give warranties and service packages to the buyer. The paperwork is more straightforward, and so is the transaction.

3. The Budget
Set the amount of money you want to spend on a car and clarify the segment to the salesperson you are looking for. Once you have done that, there are many vehicles in the market, and the salesperson will show them to you. Please don't get caught up in the talks, as they will probably show some cars that exceed your budget and woo you with the added features in the high-end vehicle. Consult your bank, too, if you have to finance your vehicle.
4. The condition of the car
Now that you have selected the particular option, you should check the vehicle for yourself or through a known local mechanic. You can do the visual test by checking on the car's exterior paint, scratches or dents on the vehicle, etc. Ask the person to raise it on a lift to check for underbody damage or suspension.
You should also check the tyres to see if they are worn out or uneven and if they require any change. For the interiors, you need to take care of the plastic quality, dashboard, seat upholstery, electrical, engine lights, steering wheel, any rust and others.
5. The paperwork
This is the last step but the crucial of the lot. You will need the registration certificate, insurance papers, pollution certificate, road tax receipt, original purchase invoice, form 35 if the car was financed and a NOC from the bank.
Also, check the engine and chassis numbers match the same mentioned in the RC. The service record will give you an idea of the vehicle's maintenance. If the colour has been changed or an engine replacement, make sure the details are updated in the registration certificate.
If the car has been involved in an accident, then do not think of purchasing that unit. Aftermarket accessories like LED lighting or a horn change should be notified, and the owner's manual and warranty details should also be on the list.
Note - There are a lot of used car dealers in the market, so steer clear of what you are looking for. Follow the steps above to reward yourself with an excellent car.
