Maruti Suzuki Swift
The Maruti Swift is one of India's most popular mid-size hatchbacks that is known for a sporty design, ease of driving and low running costs. In its latest iterations, the Swift offers increased space, extremely good efficiency and added features. The hatchback is targetted towards both young, first time buyers as well as micro families. While it remains one of the more pricier options in the segment and the new 3-cylinder engine isn't as exiciting to drive as the earlier 4-cylinder unit, the Maruti Swift continues to be popular due to a well balanced package and high re-sale value.
Maruti Suzuki Swift Latest Update
Last Updated on 4th Apr'25: The Swift has not seen many changes since the launch of its fourth-generation version. It has been subject to a few festive price hikes, and the car maker is soon set to give it another price hike which will be effective from April 1, 2025.

All-black cabin feels plasticky and lacks premium appeal
Should I buy the Swift?
The fourth-gen Maruti Swift is an evolved version of the outgoing model. With a new curvy design, it has maintained its iconic charm and appeal. Also, the upgraded cabin features make the top models worth it by price proposition. The front seats are superbly comfortable and the boot space is also decent for a family of four. However, the new Z series is not as exciting as the old one. But, its high fuel economy and the AGS automatic transmission make it very peppy in the city. We suggest buying the new Swift for the first-time car buyers who have a smaller family.
-
The exterior design of the new Swift feels like an evolved version of the outgoing model. The new LED headlights offers a strong throw at night. Also, the curvy body line makes it look cute as well as hints that this car will age gracefully.
-
The top variant gets new dual-tone alloy wheels. Also, customers can choose between three dual-tone colour options. Maruti is offering the new Swift with 9 colour options out of which 6 are monotone and 3 are dual-tone colours. Also, two new colours are now added to the list that include: Novel Orange and Luster Blue.
-
Maruti has updated the features list on the new Swift extensively. The top model gets wireless charging and rear AC vents. It has a 9-inch touchscreen and cruise control. It also has a new 4-inch MID with analogue dials in the speedometer. The touchscreen runs Smartplay Pro+ with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Swift body specifications:
| Wheel Size | R14 & R15 |
| Seating Capacity | 5 seaters |
| Ground Clearance | 163 mm |
| Boot Space | 265 liters |

- To enhance the comfortable cabin experience, Maruti has redesigned the seats. The front seats are ‘the best’ in the segment. The amount of cushioning and support on the front seats will be loved by every owner. Meanwhile, the rear seats are also well cushioned. But, they lack thigh support for tall passengers.
- In terms of space, the new-gen Swift feels more or less the same as the outgoing car. However, it is the front seats where the experience is different now. The front space feels fine now. This is thanks to the new dashboard design and revised seat design.
- The rear seat passengers can sit comfortably for shorter trips in the new Swift. Due to the less headroom and lack of thigh support, long journey can become cumbersome for passengers.
- The 295L boot space has also been reduced by 3L from the older model. It is to provide more knee room to the second-row passengers.
- The overall build quality as well as fit and finish of the new Swift feels decent. It is a typical Japanese car. So, it has no uneven panel gaps, no loose plastics, and no cheap parts. The door-thud is not very exciting as it is still a lightweight car that is made for city use primarily.
- To enhance the safety of passengers, the new-gen Swift gets 6 airbags as standard now. Maruti is also offering hill hold assist on the AGS versions. Moreover, three-point seatbelt system is now standard on the new Swift as well.
- There are no NCAP crash test ratings for the new model. But, it could get a good rating due to the addition of 6 airbags.
Swift safety specifications:
| Airbag | 6 airbags |
| ADAS | No |
| Parking Sensor | Rear Only |
- The new 1.2L, 3-cylinder, Z series petrol engine is very refined and smooth motor. Equipped with a start/stop technology, this mild-hybrid engine feels like a perfect city car powertrain. The low rev response from engine is good and the pickup in traffic is also improved from the previous model.
- Due to the 3-cylinders, this new engine has minute vibrations that can be felt on the pedals. However, it has a sweet and punchy mid-range performance.
- The AGS automatic gearbox has been tuned for better fuel efficiency. It is less jerky than the outgoing model. But, we feel that gearshifts can be smoother. This is especially true between first and second gears.
- The claimed economy of the AGS version is 25.75 kmpl while the manual version can deliver up to 24.80 kmpl. We’re yet to test these numbers in the real world conditions.
Swift engine specifications:
| Transmission | Manual & Automatic (AGS) |
| Mileage | 32.85 |
| Engine | 1197 cc |
| Power | 80.5 bhp @ 5700 rpm |
| Torque | 111.7 Nm @ 4300 rpm |
| Drive Train | FWD |

- The handling of Swift has been a forte for its brand image. The latest version also feels equally fun to drive as the outgoing version. It has the typical ‘go-kart’ handling that makes it fun to drive.
- The chassis balance is almost perfect. It feels superbly agile while filtering lanes or taking sharp corners at a faster pace.
- The suspension offers a comfortable ride quality for the major part of driving. However, it is designed for a fun driving experience and hence the low speed ride quality can feel edgy at times. Overall, it remains calm and planted on the road.
- The brake bite of the new Swift matches its fun to drive character. The initial bite is strong while the car can easily stop even at 100 kmph mark. Straight line stability is well balanced due to the improved braking system.

Latest Updates on Swift
The Maruti Swift celebrates 20 years in India, having sold over 30 lakh units since its launch in 2005, cementing its status as one of the country’s most successful hatchbacks. The milestone highlights its consistent popularity across four generations, with the model continuing to be a key contributor to Maruti Suzuki’s overall sales.
The Maruti Swift, Brezza, and other Arena models have become costlier by up to Rs 32,500, with the Celerio seeing the highest hike among the lineup. The price revision varies across variants and models, while some cars like the WagonR, S-Presso, and Ertiga remain unaffected.
The Maruti Swift has been spotted testing with an ADAS suite, featuring a radar module in the grille and cameras on the ORVMs, indicating advanced safety tech like lane assist and blind-spot monitoring. However, this test model is likely an export-spec hybrid version, and it remains uncertain whether these features will make it to the India-spec car.
The Maruti Swift hybrid has been spotted testing in India without camouflage, clearly revealing a ‘smartHYBRID’ badge and confirming the addition of mild-hybrid tech. It is expected to use the same 1.2-litre Z-Series engine paired with a 12V hybrid system, aimed at improving efficiency and adding a slight performance boost.
The Maruti Swift Blitz Edition has been launched as a limited-run, accessorised version of the hatchback, aimed at boosting appeal of lower trims. It adds cosmetic upgrades like spoilers, body moulding, fog lamps, and illuminated door sills through a complimentary accessory package worth up to ?49,000, while retaining the same engine and pricing.
