The latest document from Bajaj has leaked online showing that the first-ever CNG bike in India is currently under development. Yes, to solve the high fuel expenses of the buyers on the bikes, Bajaj is making a new bike with CNG tech. It is expected to be based on a CT110 mostly. CNG Bike - A Good Idea or Not?
As per the leaked document details, Bajaj has come up with a CNG bike design that seems feasible to manufacture. It is probably going to be a small engine i.e. either a 100cc or a 110cc. Hence, the CT110 name might be used for the expansion into the CNG segment. Now, what is it? First of all, the CNG tank is no big as the one we see in cars. Hence, the fitment will be done within the frame of the bike. Also, it'll be a removable tank. Therefore, to remove it and fit it again, users could easily take out the rear wheel. Obviously, there will be a sort of lock mechanism for the tank to remain in its place.
What about the petrol? Well, Bajaj will offer a secondary small fuel tank that will store petrol for short-range riding. It'll primarily be used to take the bike to the nearest CNG pump in case of CNG fuel exhaustion. Additionally, the fuel injection system will also be new. We know that Bajaj experimented with e-carburetors before the BS6 phase 2 came in. But, the possibility of e-FI being used can not be denied as well. Also, to accommodate the new tech & less power, Bajaj will fiddle with fuel mapping to keep the CNG bike relevant to the customers.
What else do we know? Well, the leaked documents suggest that it'll be a commuter bike for sure. But, Bajaj has now started offering decent features even on its commuter bikes. Therefore, the CNG model shall also get LRD DRL, USB phone charging, etc. But, we don't think it'll be very feature-laden due to the cost-benefit ratio of manufacturing it. When will it come? As there is no concrete info about the debut timeline, we can only expect it to debut sometime by the end of next year.
Verdict
CNG tech in bikes is an idea which no other manufacturer has acted upon until now. Bajaj's new appraoch towards affordable commuting shall prove to be a breakthrough as it did with the Chetak scooter decades ago.
