Original Article - July 27, 2020; We Indians want more! More on luxury, more on space, more on features and the case is similar with cars too. Nowadays, most buyers, other than considering the 'Kitna Deti Hai' factor, also want to know how many features they're getting. So to make the choices easier, carmakers have introduced a 'Compact' segment which delivers the uniqueness and features of bigger into a smaller car. Here, we will be sharing with you a total of five reasons as to why having a compact sedan is better than a compact SUV!

Both compact sedan and SUV are measured at sub-4-metre length thus evading the tax slab and offering more in less. While the SUVs have their own charm, a feature-loaded SUV surpasses Rs 10 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi price. If you choose a compact sedan then you can very well save loads of money and also enjoy the driving pleasure. We'll continue to those five points now!

Same Cost, More Features

Let's take the example of Hyundai Aura SX(O) 1.2L with Hyundai Venue S 1.2L. The price of Aura sticks to Rs 7.87 lakh while that of Hyundai Venue Rs 7.50 lakh.

We compared both these variants due to the similar pricing but if we were to take the SX(O) Variant of the Venue then that would have cost us Rs 10.90 lakh which is around Rs 3 lakh more expensive. That would have surely given us features like BlueLink connectivity, an electric sunroof and a more powerful petrol motor. But how many of you will use a sunroof or BlueLink connectivity on a daily basis? I agree the turbo petrol engine is an advantage and so you can pick the same on the Aura too. Then that SX Plus variant will cost you Rs 8.56 lakh which is still cheaper than the SX Plus of Venue which is priced at Rs 11.36 lakh.

More Passenger Space

This does not come as a surprise that the compact sedan will provide you with more space and comfort. The known examples are Honda Amaze and Ford Aspire. The longer wheelbase in these cars comes with better legroom to stretch your legs and a better headroom too.

Better ARAI Fuel Efficiency

Let's compare two compact sedans with two compact SUVs of the same make. We consider the SX(O) 1.2L of Hyundai Aura with that of Hyundai Venue S 1.2L. Both these engines make 82 bhp with 114 Nm of peak torque. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox and the ARAI rated mileage sticks to 20.5 km/l and 17.52 km/l respectively.

Another example is of the Maruti Dzire AGS vs Maruti Brezza 4-speed torque converter. One uses a smaller 1.2L engine while the Brezza gets a 1.5L engine. This may not be the right example but still, by paying less you are not getting more on features but also it saves your pocket on fuel expenses. The 1.2L Dzire delivers 24.12 km/l while Brezza delivers 18.76 km/l.

Bigger Boot Space
We'll compete Maruti Dzire with Maruti Brezza itself. The two most popular cars in their segment right now! Even if you choose Maruti Brezza then you get 378 litres of boot space while that in Brezza sticks to 328 litres.

Another popular example is of Mahindra XUV300 which only gets 257 litres of boot space. This volume is even smaller when compared with some of the hatchbacks. So keeping this in consideration that you are paying Rs 10 lakh+ for an SUV but when you take road trips, it becomes a hassle because your SUV doesn't have the required boot space.

Less body roll and more stability on corners at high speeds

Be it a compact or a full-size SUV, we have all experienced a significant amount of body roll when we take sharp turns at high speeds. However, this is significantly lower when compared with compact sedans. So a sedan may not provide a better ground clearance per se but will definitely give you the joy of taking sharp turns and keeping the car intact with the road.
