India-UK FTA To Make European Cars Affordable in India: Myth or Fact? We Explain

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Import duties on UK cars gradually reducing.
  • Luxury car prices unlikely to drop immediately.
  • FTA benefits apply only to UK-made cars.
  • Most European models already locally assembled in India.
  • Long-term gains include localisation and job creation.

The recently signed India-UK FTA (Free Trade Agreement) is being hailed as a milestone in international commerce, promising to enhance bilateral trade, reduce duties, and unlock fresh opportunities. But amid all the economic optimism, a pressing question has sparked curiosity among Indian car buyers - Will European luxury cars finally become affordable? We did a deep research to put all the facts in front of you that tells the truth. Before moving ahead, please join our 91Wheels WhatsApp Community to stay updated on the latest automotive news.

The Promise of Lower Import Duties: What's Changing?

One of the standout clauses in the India-UK FTA is a reduction in import tariffs. Over the next 10-15 years, duties on UK-manufactured petrol and diesel vehicles are set to reduce significantly, potentially dropping from the current 100%+ levels to as low as 10%. At first glance, this seems like a game-changer.

However, there's a catch. The duty reductions are quota-based - hence, only a certain number of vehicles per year will qualify for these relaxed tariffs. That means not all UK-made cars will enjoy these benefits, and any volumes beyond the quota may still attract hefty duties.

Reality Check: Most European Cars Are Already Locally Assembled

The key factor dampening hopes for drastic price cuts is local assembly. Brands like Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) already manufacture or assemble a majority of their popular models right here in India. This makes them eligible for significantly lower taxes under existing norms, even without any FTA benefits.

For example:

  • Around 95 percent of Mercedes-Benz India's sales come from locally assembled CKD (Completely Knocked Down) units.
  • BMW has a strong localisation strategy and a dedicated production facility in Chennai.
  • JLR locally assembles the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Velar, Evoque, and Discovery Sport, effectively insulating them from import-based pricing.

So, for these brands, FTA-driven price cuts will be minimal or non-existent, simply because their best-selling models already enjoy favourable tax treatment under India's CKD rules.

The Defender Dilemma: A Misunderstood Exception

Among the few luxury cars that are currently fully imported is the Land Rover Defender, which has gained massive popularity in India. Naturally, enthusiasts expect its prices to drop sharply under the new agreement.

But here's the twist: the Defender is built in Slovakia, not the UK. And under the FTA, only UK-manufactured products qualify for reduced duties. So, despite being a Land Rover, the Defender is ineligible for these benefits unless its production shifts to the UK - or begins local assembly in India.

Rumours suggest local assembly of the Defender could happen soon, which might bring modest price reductions (around 20%), but this shift is unrelated to the FTA and is more about strategic localisation.

Why Prices Won't Crash Overnight

India-UK FTA

Even in cases where the FTA does apply, any meaningful price correction is years away. Here's why:

  • Gradual duty reduction: The FTA follows a staggered timeline over a decade or more.
  • Quota limits: Only a fixed number of cars per year will benefit.
  • Market dynamics: Brands are unlikely to slash prices overnight when current demand already outpaces supply.

So, Will European Luxury Cars Become Cheaper?

Short answer: Not really.

While the FTA is a landmark deal with long-term economic benefits, its impact on luxury car pricing is limited - at least for now. Most premium models are already built or assembled in India, and the few that aren't either don't qualify for the FTA or have upcoming localisation plans of their own.

The Real Benefits: Long-Term Gains and Strategic Shifts

India-UK FTA

Instead of immediate price cuts, the FTA will:

  • Encourage deeper localisation to sidestep import duties entirely.
  • Increase investment from European automakers in Indian production facilities.
  • Boost the vendor and supplier ecosystem, generating more employment and skill development.
  • Create a more stable pricing environment by reducing dependency on volatile forex markets.

Verdict

The idea that the India-UK FTA will instantly make European luxury cars affordable is more myth than fact. But the agreement does lay the groundwork for a future where premium vehicles may become more accessible - not through tariff cuts alone, but via smarter localisation strategies and stronger economic ties. So if you are eyeing that Range Rover or BMW hoping for a steep discount - you may need to wait a while.
