Volkswagen Sub-4m SUV India Launch Officially Confirmed; Check Details
Volkswagen has put an end to months of speculation by officially confirming that it will bring a brand-new sub-4 metre compact SUV to the Indian market, with the launch expected by 2027. The announcement, made on August 21, 2026, marks the German carmaker's entry into the country's biggest and most fiercely contested passenger vehicle segment - one it has stayed out of until now. Check out more details about the same below.

A New Entry Point for the Brand in India
Until this point, the Taigun has served as Volkswagen's most affordable SUV offering in India. With the arrival of this new sub-4m model, that position will shift, giving the brand a genuinely accessible SUV that competes directly in the volume-driven compact SUV space rather than the segment just above it. Volkswagen has described the upcoming model as its most attainable German-engineered SUV for Indian buyers to date.
Built on the MQB-A0-IN Platform

The new SUV will ride on the MQB-A0-IN platform, the same modular architecture that already forms the basis of models like the Taigun and Virtus. This platform was specifically developed with Indian roads, cost structures, and ownership patterns in mind, having been jointly engineered by teams in India and Europe. Volkswagen says the platform is built around three priorities: keeping localisation levels high, lowering the overall cost of ownership, and streamlining production so the car can be manufactured efficiently at scale within the country.
Because the vehicle will be developed and built in India, Volkswagen expects it to benefit from more efficient powertrain options and current-generation safety tech, all calibrated to meet Indian regulatory and emission requirements.
Manufactured Locally
A key part of this announcement is that the SUV won't just be sold in India - it will be built here too. Local manufacturing is central to Volkswagen's messaging around this launch, positioning India not merely as a sales market but as a genuine production and engineering base within its global operations. The move is also expected to widen the company's local supplier ecosystem and create additional opportunities across its manufacturing footprint in the country.
What Volkswagen's Leadership Had to Say
Thomas Schafer, CEO of the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand and a board member at Volkswagen AG, called India a market of considerable scale and ambition, framing the new SUV as an important milestone in the company's ongoing India journey. He emphasised that the model is being engineered specifically with Indian customers in mind, rather than being a global product adapted for local use.
Piyush Arora, Managing Director & CEO of Skoda Auto Volkswagen India, echoed that sentiment, pointing to the new SUV as proof of the company's deeper intent to treat India as an innovation and manufacturing hub for the wider Volkswagen Group, not just a market to sell into.
Meanwhile, Nitin Kohli, Brand Director at Volkswagen India, framed the launch around accessibility, describing the goal as bringing the brand's German engineering credentials within reach of a broader base of Indian SUV buyers. According to Kohli, the model is expected to deliver strong volumes for the brand while retaining Volkswagen's traditional focus on driving dynamics, safety, and build quality. He also indicated that Volkswagen plans to expand its retail and market presence in India as the 2027 launch date approaches.

Why This Matters
The sub-4 metre SUV segment remains the single largest and most competitive space in the Indian passenger vehicle market, dominated currently by the likes of the Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, Tata Nexon, and Maruti Suzuki Brezza, among others. Volkswagen entering this space with a locally developed, locally built product signals a serious push to grab volume rather than simply protect its premium image. It also suggests the brand sees long-term value in scaling up its India operations well beyond its current model lineup, which includes the Taigun, Virtus, Tiguan R-Line, and the Golf GTI.
With the launch still roughly a year and a half away, further details on design, powertrain options, and pricing are expected to trickle out as Volkswagen moves closer to the 2027 market introduction. We'll bring you updates as more information becomes available.
