JSW Motors is gearing up to enter the Indian passenger vehicle market as a standalone car manufacturer, and its first product is set to be a rugged, globally proven SUV. The Indian conglomerate has partnered with Chinese automaker Chery to introduce a rebadged version of the Jetour T2 in India, marking a major step in JSW's long-term automotive ambitions. Jetour T2 to Be JSW's First Independent SUV

Unlike JSW's existing joint venture with MG Motor India, this upcoming SUV will be launched independently under the JSW Motors banner. While the vehicle is based on the Jetour T2 sold globally, it will not carry Jetour branding in India and will instead wear a JSW badge and model identity. This move signals JSW's intent to establish its own footprint in the Indian SUV space rather than relying solely on partnerships. Assembly will take place at JSW's upcoming greenfield manufacturing facility in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Maharashtra, with showroom entry expected by the third quarter of 2026.

Globally, the Jetour T2 is offered with conventional petrol engines as well as electrified options. For India, however, JSW is expected to introduce only the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version, aligning with the group's stated focus on sustainable and future-ready mobility. The T2 i-DM uses a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with an electric motor and battery pack. Internationally, the SUV is available in both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations, though JSW has not yet confirmed which drivetrain option will be offered locally.
The SUV features a bold, upright, boxy silhouette that draws inspiration from hardcore off-roaders like the Land Rover Defender. Despite its rugged appearance, the T2 is built on a monocoque platform rather than a ladder-frame chassis, balancing structural rigidity with on-road comfort. In terms of size, the SUV measures close to 4.7 metres in length and over 2 metres in width, giving it a larger footprint than many three-row SUVs like the Tata Safari. Interestingly, the version expected for India is a five-seater, with a longer seven-seat derivative available globally.

Expected Pricing

Pricing will be a critical factor. In markets like the UAE, the front-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid version of the T2 retails at the equivalent of around Rs 35 lakh. Local assembly could help JSW price the SUV more competitively in India, placing it against models such as the Toyota Fortuner, Skoda Kodiaq, and others.
Verdict
The JSW-Chery partnership and the India-bound Jetour T2-based hybrid SUV could mark a significant shift in the premium SUV landscape. By opting for a plug-in hybrid powertrain and local assembly, JSW is positioning itself at the intersection of sustainability, performance, and rugged design. If pricing is kept competitive and feature levels meet expectations, this upcoming SUV could offer Indian buyers a solid alternative to long-standing segment leaders.
