Maruti Suzuki has rolled out the updated Baleno in the Indian market, with the premium hatchback now carrying a starting sticker price of Rs. 6.09 lakh, ex-showroom. Rather than a ground-up redesign, this update is best described as a thorough mid-life refresh; the car gets a new heart under the bonnet (a smaller one), a handful of segment-relevant convenience features, and mild cosmetic tweaks to keep it looking current against newer rivals. What's New Under the Hood

The headline change with this update is the engine. Maruti has retired the four-cylinder 1.2-litre petrol unit that has powered the Baleno for years and replaced it with the newer 1.2-litre, three-cylinder Z-series motor, the same engine that does duty in the Swift and Dzire. Maruti's engineers have tuned this unit to prioritise low-end pulling power, which should make it feel peppier in stop-start city traffic even if outright refinement takes a slight hit compared to the outgoing four-pot.

Buyers get a choice of a five-speed manual gearbox or an AMT automatic. For those who want to run on cheaper fuel, a factory-fitted CNG kit remains on offer, and in a first for this hatchback, that CNG setup can now be paired with the automatic gearbox too. This puts the Baleno in a fairly small club of cars in the segment offering a CNG-and-automatic combination, a pairing until recently associated mainly with the Tata Altroz.

Cabin Upgrades Worth Noting

In terms of interiors, the layout will feel familiar to anyone who has sat in the previous Baleno; Maruti hasn't reinvented the dashboard architecture. The changes here are additive rather than transformative. Ventilated front seats make their debut on the car, a feature that nudges the Baleno a notch upmarket within its class. There's also a wireless phone charger that now uses active cooling to stop the pad from overheating during use, a small but thoughtful touch for anyone who's felt their phone get uncomfortably warm while charging on the move.

The touchscreen infotainment unit, height-adjustable driver's seat, automatic climate control, a head-up display, and a 360-degree camera system all continue from the older car, so existing Baleno owners won't feel like they're stepping into unfamiliar territory.

Safety Gets a Meaningful Boost

Perhaps the most significant addition, especially from a buyer's perspective, is the arrival of Level 2 ADAS on the Baleno for the first time. This brings adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keep assist into the mix - driver-assistance features that, until now, have been rare in this price bracket and have typically been reserved for cars a segment or two higher. A tyre pressure monitoring system has also been added to the equipment list.

Design Changes Are Subtle

Maruti has kept the exterior changes restrained. The front end gets a larger grille finished in a black slatted pattern, along with reworked bumpers and updated fog lamp housings. The alloy wheels have a fresh 16-inch design, and a shark-fin antenna has been added atop the roof. The headlamps and tail lamps, however, remain unchanged from the outgoing model, and overall dimensions, including the car's length and wheelbase, haven't been altered. Also, a new teal shade joins the colour palette for buyers wanting something different from the usual whites and greys.
