The 2020 Mahindra Thar is the much-awaited 4X4 SUV in the market and that it will come with an automatic gearbox with an all-new diesel engine makes it even a better choice. We say it because in a recent video, the upcoming Thar was spotted and several details of the SUV could be visible through naked eyes. One of the major changes is the inclusion of an automatic transmission in new diesel of 2020 Mahindra Thar.
Several reports have been flourishing on the internet that Mahindra will ditch the older 2.5-litre CRDe turbo diesel for a more powerful 2.0L mHawk or the 2.2L unit from Scorpio. Similarly, the power will also increase and is expected to reach 140 bhp mark. It is expected to carry a 6-speed manual gearbox along with an automatic unit. It will come in various variants and will rival the updated Force Gurkha.
The spy shots from the cabin showcase a new steering wheel with multi-function controls and an updated multi-info instrument cluster. The latter looks like it is borrowed from Mahindra Marazzo. You also see automatic climate control, front power windows and more features to follow. As seen in the video, this one gets a bright red colour scheme which can be seen on the door profile.

This unit also shows the touchscreen infotainment unit and we expect it to come with modern connectivity features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Mahindra has now removed the side bench for front-facing rear seats. It is not sure whether the SUV will come with start/stop button or not. This one features an all-black seat upholstery which adds sportiness to the SUV.
Coming to the exteriors then it will be offered in both soft and hard top trims along with an updated 7-slat grille design at the front which is inspired by Jeep Wrangler. Both front and rear bumpers will be tweaked and the LED taillights make space at the rear. This unit which is shown in the video seems to feature detachable hardtop just like we've seen in the Wrangler. If this comes true then Mahindra Thar will be one of the most good looking and affordable 4x4 in the market. It will also feature 18-inch wheels with a sporty design.

According to our sources, Mahindra Thar is still 2-3 months away from its official launch and the SUV will be priced a little higher than the older generation. We expect it to come with a price tag of Rs 9 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi. Once launched the SUV will compete with the likes of Force Gurkha and upcoming Maruti Suzuki Jimny. The latter is said to make its debut with a 5-door version.
