Check Out Advantages And Disadvantages Of Cold Air Intake System

Are you planning to buy a cold air intake system? Do you know the advantages and disadvantages of CAI? If not, have a look at this article before buying one!

There is a moment in automotive enthusiasts' life when it would have felt like being a child on the night of Christmas, all cosy with a dreamy cup of hot chocolate waiting to open up the gifts. Yes, such is the feeling for most car enthusiasts who visit an aftermarket shop for new parts. But wait! are aftermarket parts all that good for a car? Should something as simple as an aftermarket air intake system be good for our cars? Well, let us find out through this article before getting all excited with the new goodies.

But before we begin, let us understand thoroughly what a cold intake system is and how it functions as not many of us are experts. To begin with, let me explain what it actually does:

What Is Cold Air Intake System?

A cold air intake system (CAI) is a performance-oriented aftermarket setup that introduces more air into the engine. It is installed to bring in more cool air into the car's internal combustion engine. This allows the vehicle to churn out performance in terms of improved power delivery.

Intake systems come in different types in terms of construction. They can be constructed with plastic, rubber, metal or composite materials like fibreglass, carbon fibre or kevlar. Intake systems basically use an airbox which is perfect to be fit in the engine bay and it extends the powerband of the engine. It also comes with an opening for air intake called the intake snorkel which ensures sufficient air is available for the engine under all conditions. It maximises performance, efficiency, and fuel economy.

In simple, the basic principle behind cold air intake is that cooler air has a higher density. This allows the process of combustion inside the engine to be slicker and efficient.

Now that we have discussed what a CAI means, let us consider the advantages and disadvantages of installing a cold air intake system in a vehicle:

Advantages of CAI system:

1. Improved fuel efficiency:

Cold Air Intake improves fuel efficiency

A cold air intake can help enhance the fuel efficiency of a vehicle as the right volume of oxygen is thrust into the engine. This is important for combustion-based engines as it helps them to yield more power by burning fuel. The insufficiency of oxygen can cause an increase in fuel consumption by the vehicle, therefore, installing a cold air intake can solve this issue once and for all by providing optimum air to fuel ratio. Also, installing a CAI can reduce your expenses on fuel significantly.

2. Improves Acceleration:

2. Improves Acceleration:

Cold air intakes can potentially improve the acceleration of a vehicle. It is simply because more air is thrust into the engine. The more the air the more oxygen that enters the internal combustion engine. It makes sure that the performance of the engine in terms of accelerating power increases as rapid air surges to the engine to improve combustion. Therefore, to improve the responsiveness and efficiency of the vehicle, installing a cold air intake is the best move.

3. Increase in Horsepower:

CAI improves horsepower

Cold air intake can increase the horsepower figures quite instantly once it is installed in a vehicle. As mentioned earlier, cold air intake allows the vehicle to breathe in more oxygen. This makes sure that the process of combustion is much efficient. The increased rate of combustion due to the rapid flow of oxygen into the engine allows the vehicle to churn out more power. Therefore, installing a CAI could increase the horsepower by 5 to 12 additional HP. However, do note that the said figures vary from one vehicle to another.

Disadvantages of cold air intake system:

1. Hydrostatic locking:

Disadvantages of cold air intake system:

Hydro-locking is a process in which a certain amount of liquid or moisture enters into the cylinders of an internal combustion engine and stops the pistons from functioning optimally. The liquid or moisture stops the pistons from travelling completely in its space as a result of which the engine stops rotating causing mechanical failure. Therefore, installing a CAI could result in such a condition. It could also occur if proper maintenance is not conducted.

2. Accuracy of reading:

It is a common problem that has been mentioned by most car enthusiasts that the reading accuracy of their vehicles meter is bad. It could have occurred due to the installation of the CAI system since the calculation of air to fuel ratio changes when the OEM part is replaced. However, this problem can be solved by tuning it to the right specs.

3. Increase of exhaust sounds:

The sound of a vehicle will be louder and more aggressive with a cold air intake system. One can hear the sound of the air gushing into the engine. In addition to this, the flow of air causes the engine to make a grunty noise. Although most car enthusiasts love it, some might feel it as an excessive sound. Therefore, it all depends on who would want it and don't.
