- Camouflaged Tata Punch test mule spotted on public roads
- Could be testing production-ready flex-fuel technology compatible with E85 ethanol blends
- Tata showcased the Punch Flex Fuel concept at the Bharat Mobility Expo 2025
Tata Motors could be taking the next step towards introducing its first flex-fuel passenger vehicle in India. A heavily camouflaged Tata Punch test mule has recently been spotted undergoing road tests, sparking speculation that the company may be validating a production-ready version of the Punch Flex Fuel showcased earlier. But this isn't expected to be a flex-fuel vehicle without any basis or reason. Why The Tata Punch Test Mule Is Being Linked To A Flex-Fuel Version

The sighting comes at a time when multiple manufacturers are exploring alternative fuel technologies as the Indian government continues to push for greater ethanol adoption. With the Tata Punch already serving as one of Tata's most important volume products, it appears to be a logical choice for the brand's flex-fuel debut. The speculation isn't without basis. During the Bharat Mobility Expo 2025, Tata Motors displayed a Punch Flex Fuel prototype capable of operating on ethanol blends of up to E85, meaning the fuel can contain as much as 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent petrol.

However, that showcase model was based on the pre-facelift Punch. The newly spotted test vehicle appears to be based on the updated Punch facelift introduced earlier this year, suggesting Tata may now be evaluating a near-production version of the technology. While Tata Motors has not officially confirmed the purpose of the test vehicle, the timing aligns with the company's previously stated interest in flex-fuel powertrains.
What Changes Does A Flex-Fuel Vehicle Need?
Compared to the standard petrol or CNG-powered Punch, an E85-compatible version would likely feature revised fuel storage and delivery systems, upgraded fuel injectors, changes to engine management software, and modifications to the exhaust treatment setup. These updates are necessary because ethanol has different combustion and corrosion characteristics compared to conventional petrol. Such changes would allow the vehicle to operate efficiently across varying ethanol concentrations without compromising durability or performance. However, the long-term impact of higher ethanol blends on vehicles designed for lower ethanol concentrations continues to be debated, and the nationwide availability of multiple fuel grades will be a key challenge.

What About The Updated Tata Punch?
The latest Punch facelift introduced a number of updates around cosmetics and features, including a stronger focus on safety. Six airbags are now offered as standard across the range, while features such as Electronic Stability Control (ESC), ABS with EBD, a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), and a rear parking camera are also part of the package. The model lineup has also expanded mechanically. Buyers can choose between a naturally aspirated petrol engine, a CNG option, and a new turbo-petrol powertrain producing 120 PS and 170 Nm, making it one of the most powerful offerings in the micro-SUV segment.
Verdict
Although Tata Motors has yet to officially confirm the identity of the spotted test mule, all signs point towards continued development of a flex-fuel version of the Punch. With ethanol-based mobility gaining increasing government support and rival manufacturers also accelerating their efforts, Tata appears keen to ensure it remains part of the next phase of India's alternative-fuel transition. When launched, the Punch Flex Fuel could become one of the first mass-market SUVs in the country capable of running on E85 fuel, making a solid case for itself and a badge that could give it a massive edge until the rivals catch up.
