Upcoming Next-Gen Kia Sonet: Everything We Know So Far

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • New K1 platform expected to improve safety, technology, and cabin space
  • Feature list could include a panoramic sunroof and dual 12.3-inch displays
  • Hybrid version likely to join the lineup after the standard model's 2027 launch

The Kia Sonet has consistently been one of the strongest performers in the compact SUV segment since its launch, and even after receiving a substantial facelift in 2024, demand for the SUV has remained strong. However, Kia is already preparing a much bigger transformation. The second-generation Sonet, currently under development and undergoing road testing, is expected to arrive in India in 2027 with significant upgrades in safety, technology, practicality, and overall refinement. Built on an entirely new architecture and likely to introduce several segment-leading features, the next-generation Sonet could become Kia's most ambitious compact SUV yet. Let's take a look at everything that we know so far about this upcoming update, but before that, make sure to join the 91wheels WhatsApp Community, specifically curated for petrolheads like us to keep up with the latest news and automotive updates.

Upcoming Kia Sonet: New Platform, Big Changes

One of the most important developments for the upcoming Kia Sonet is the switch to Kias newer K1 platform. Replacing the ageing K2 architecture used by the current model, the new underpinnings are expected to deliver benefits beyond just structural improvements. More importantly for buyers, the wheelbase is expected to grow slightly, allowing Kia to improve rear-seat accommodation and overall cabin practicality without significantly increasing the SUV's footprint. Safety could also see a notable boost. Vehicles based on this architecture have already demonstrated strong crash-test performances, raising expectations that the next-generation Sonet could set new benchmarks in occupant protection within its segment.

Although heavily camouflaged prototypes have kept most styling details hidden, early sightings suggest the SUV will receive a comprehensive exterior redesign. Visible elements include a revised front fascia, a redesigned grille, fresh alloy wheel designs, and a more upright stance. Kia is expected to evolve the Sonets styling rather than completely reinvent it, retaining the model's sporty and urban appeal while incorporating design cues from newer global Kia SUVs.

Cabin To Become More Premium And Tech-Focused

The biggest transformation may occur inside the cabin. Kia is expected to further strengthen the Sonet's reputation as one of the most feature-rich SUVs in its class by introducing a host of new comfort, convenience, and safety technologies. Expected features include a larger 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, a matching 12.3-inch digital driver's display, Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), a panoramic sunroof, a 360-degree camera, and a powered driver's seat. Buyers can also expect ventilated front seats, wireless charging, rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlamps, and electrically adjustable outside mirrors with auto-fold functionality. Apart from the equipment upgrades, Kia is also likely to introduce revised upholstery options, improved cabin materials, and a fresh interior theme to create a more premium ambience.

Familiar Engines To Continue

Under the hood, Kia is expected to retain its existing engine lineup, ensuring continuity for buyers familiar with the current Sonet.

1.0-litre Turbo-Petrol120 PS172 Nm
1.5-litre Diesel120 PS250 Nm*

Transmission choices are also likely to remain unchanged and could include a 5-speed manual, 6-speed iMT, 6-speed automatic, and 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, depending on the engine selected. While the standard next-generation Sonet is expected to arrive in 2027, a hybrid derivative could follow a year or two later.

Expected Launch And Pricing

Current indications suggest the next-generation Sonet will make its India debut in early 2027. While the SUV is expected to gain substantial upgrades, Kia is likely to adopt a competitive pricing strategy to maintain its appeal. Industry estimates indicate a price increase of around Rs 50,000 over the current model range. The hybrid version, if introduced later, is expected to command a premium and could be positioned between Rs 12 lakh and Rs 18 lakh, depending on the variant and equipment level.

Verdict

The next-generation Kia Sonet is going to be a big step-up rather than a routine model update. A new platform, improved safety credentials, enhanced rear-seat space, and an even richer feature list could help the compact SUV strengthen its position in an already crowded market. Add the possibility of a hybrid powertrain in the future, and Kia may have a product capable of challenging segment leaders more aggressively than ever before. If the company manages to keep pricing competitive, the new Sonet could once again emerge as one of the benchmark offerings in the compact SUV category.
