Starting 25 October, Delhiites Won't Be Able To Get Petrol & Diesel Without A Valid PUC - Details

Delhi is one of the most polluted metropolitan cities in the world, and the winter months make the situation worse. The Delhi government makes several efforts and issues new directives every year to address the situation. To address the issue, now the sale of petrol and diesel to cars and motorcycles without a valid Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate would be prohibited by the Delhi government, which is governed by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

Gopal Rai, the Environment Minister of Delhi, announced last week in a press conference that starting on October 25, fuel pumps in the nation's capital will no longer sell petrol and diesel without PUC certificates. A formal announcement will soon be made by the government.

Petrol Pump

The decision was made, according to the Delhi Environment Minister, at a meeting of officials from the traffic, transportation, and environment departments on September 29. At the meeting, the principles and execution of the plan were addressed. He further said "Vehicular emission is one of the key contributors to rising pollution in Delhi. It is imperative to reduce it so it has been decided that from October 25 petrol, diesel will not be provided at petrol pumps without PUC certificate of the vehicle."

The Minister stated that the PUC certifications of all government departments' cars have also been advised to be checked. The government has already stationed 500 teams at various gas stations to ensure that this campaign is successful and raises public awareness.

Owners of vehicles who do not have a valid PUC are subject to a fine of up to Rs10,000, a jail sentence of up to six months, or both under Section 190(2) of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1993. Previously, the government has banned 10-year-old diesel vehicles and 15-year-old petrol vehicles in the capital to combat pollution caused by the vehicles.
