Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric vs BMW iX1 LWB - Which German EV Is More Efficient?

Lets begin with the introduction - the new 2026 Mercedes CLA Electric is a new vehicle, built on an MMA platform with an 800-volt architecture. On the other hand, the iX1 LWB is an electric version of the BMW X1. So, one is a fully developed, built-from-scratch EV, while the latter is an extension or iteration of an existing car. Plus, the CLA, being a sedan with a drag coefficient of 0.21, puts it miles ahead in the efficiency game.

That said, despite a 0.26 Cd, the SUV nature of it will never be able to provide more efficiency - but it has its own positives, like more space on offer and ground clearance that allows drivers to tackle bad roads with more confidence.

It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds, but this car is primarily about covering long distances in supreme comfort and with a high-class feel.

On the other hand, BMW has also engineered its car with efficiency in mind. The iX1 LWB offers a claimed range of 531 km, which is commendable, but it does fall short when compared to the Mercedes. That said, pricing plays a crucial role here - the iX1 LWB is priced at Rs 51.40 lakh (ex-showroom), while the CLA Electric starts at Rs 55 lakh, with the other two variants priced at Rs 59 lakh and Rs 64 lakh, respectively. Charging Speed

The BMW iX1 LWB features a 64.8 kWh battery pack and supports AC charging at up to 11 kW, taking approximately 6 hours and 45 minutes for a full 0-100% charge. On the DC front, it supports a maximum charging capacity of 130 kW, enabling a 10-80% charge in around 32 minutes. In comparison, the Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric offers significantly higher DC charging capability, with up to 320 kW (CLA 250+) and an 800-volt architecture, allowing it to add up to 400 km of range in just 20 minutes.

While the BMW's charging figures are competitive and practical for everyday use, the Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric demonstrates a clear advantage in fast-charging performance and overall charging technology.

So, out and out - if you want to save money and want an extremely efficient luxury - out of these only CLA Electric is the right option, and fair to say that its the new electric king.
