Pros And Cons Of Normal Air vs Nitrogen In Tyres Explained

A lot of Indian car buyers are duped of their money at fuel stations when the attendant says that Sir, fill nitrogen as you will get better fuel economy or the tyres will remain cool at longer journeys and among several other reasons. But should you really invest your money here? Will it show the result? We explain to you the pros and cons of filling nitrogen in your tyres!

For starters, let me share with you the benefits of normal air

Normal Air is 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen and 1% mixture of CO2 and water vapour. Now, as we all know and have seen that when summers arrive, the tyre pressure increases and in the winters it decreases. This is because air has a tendency to mould itself according to the situation present.
Whereas Nitrogen sticks to its purest form.

Advantages of Air

Free
Everyone loves things when they come free of cost and filling normal air in tyres is mostly free across all parts of the country.

Available almost everywhere
Often free things are not available everywhere but that is not true in the case of the normal air. At any fuel station, you can get check the tyre pressure and also fill in the air if it is less. It is free of cost.

Disadvantages
Tyre wear is prone to when filling normal air
That is true. Not a lot but a marginal difference is observed in the tyre wear when you are filling normal air over the premium nitrogen. The quality of nitrogen allows less wear and tear to the tyre.

Tyre pressure changes with temperature
In summers, the tyre pressure increases because of the friction between tyres and the road. Similarly, in winters, the tyre pressure decreases because of the colder temperature. This is not seen in nitrogen at all.

Air gets leaked
Over a period of time, the air inside the tyre decreases and that is why we need to at least check the tyre pressure once on a weekly basis.

Advantages of Nitrogen

Since nitrogen is cool in nature, the tyres wont be warmed up much even if it is driving for long distances without break
