Tesla Model Y Continues Testing: Design Cues

Tesla's entry in the Indian market is a long time coming, and considering the turn of events and the current happenings, it's not very far away from reality. While the brand straightens up the manufacturing and dealership strategies, the Tesla Model Y has been spied on a test run, and while it was spotted on a highway just recently, these new shots give us a 360-degree view of what the car would offer when launched here in India.

First up, the front profile, although heavily wrapped in camo, is unmistakably the Model Y facelift with split LED headlamps and the bumper styling. Not to forget the impression of a connected LED light bar upfront. While this is a fastback SUV, which is an extension of the coupe-style SUVs, the road presence feels imposing, and will attract gazes when on the road. The same is true for its rear profile as well, which also has some interesting bits going on for it.

The rear profile again gets a lip spoiler that adds to the overall sporty silhouette of the Model Y, and the connected LED light bar terminating in C-shaped LED tail lamps adds another dimension to the overall looks. Other than that, the styling has been kept minimal at the rear with the lower bumper adding some depth of its own for a more cohesive appearance. The side profile reveals the blacked-out 19-inch alloy wheels with low-profile tyres, and this is where the body style of the Model Y truly shines, stating a fluidic and sharper undertone to the road presence.

The facelifted Tesla Model Y brings several comfort and tech upgrades to enhance the user experience, including ventilated and power-adjustable front seats, softer cabin materials, and a quieter interior. Rear passengers now get powered reclining seats and an 8-inch touchscreen for controlling climate, media, and games. A 15.4-inch main display remains the centerpiece, complemented by ambient LED lighting. On the safety front, it's loaded with advanced driver-assistance systems and features like automatic emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring. There is almost negligible chance that the Model Y here in India will offer any self-driving feature, considering the regulations and the dynamic road conditions here in India.

Battery And Range Details

Tesla Model Y will be offered in two versions: a standard RWD and a Long-Range AWD. According to CLTC figures, the RWD variant delivers up to 662 km of range, while the AWD stretches it to 719 km with battery sizes are 57 kWh and 75 kWh, respectively, for international variants, both supporting 250 kW fast charging that can add around 270 km in just 15 minutes. Highlights include adaptive headlights, a self-cleaning front camera, OTA updates, and full self-driving options. Although India-specific details are yet unknown, it is likely that both battery pack options will be introduced.
For the pricing, until the manufacturing scene is sorted out, it will either be a CKD unit or will enter via the CBU route, both adding significant tax implications, taking the price north of Rs 50 lakhs ex-showroom.
Verdict
Tesla has been a buzz word here in India owing to its self-driving feature being the biggest talking point since ages and how people liked to imagine its future here in India. While that might not be the feature that makes it to India for now, but the EV boom is sure to help out in big sales number. Although the price tag can be brought down by a big margin when and if local manufacturing commences, it would be intersting to see how it fares aginst the other premium EVs from the likes of Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and others.
