The official message from Citroen mentions new starting prices for three of its cars - C3, Aircross, and Basalt X - but does not include its flagship C5 Aircross. As per the Government of India, the new GST rate has reduced tax from 29% to 18% on small cars with engines up to 1200cc and a length under 4 meters. Additionally, cars longer than 4 meters with engine displacements between 1200cc and 1500cc now get a 5% rate cut, bringing the tax down to 40%. The maximum benefit is applied to the C3, which from September 22 will start at Rs 4.80 lakh (ex-showroom), compared to its current starting price of Rs 5.25 lakh (ex-showroom).

  • C3 - New Starting Price - Rs 4.80 Lakh
  • Basalt X - New Starting Price - Rs 7.95 Lakh
  • Aircross - New Starting Price - Rs 8.32 Lakh

Out of these, the Basalt X is the newest car, which has recently received several feature upgrades, including a refreshed interior layout, beige upholstery, push-start button, ambient lighting, cruise control, keyless entry, and a new AI assistant named Cara. On the exterior, the only noticeable change is the revised fog-lamp placement. Mechanically, this new version remains unchanged, with no differences in engine or transmission options.

Verdict

"This new step by the Government of India is a gift to the nation ahead of the festive season," said the Prime Minister - and we couldn't agree more. With increased purchasing power and the potential boost to GDP, buyers can look forward not only to reduced prices but also to additional dealer-level offers. The big question now is: will Citroen finally have its moment? With even its larger turbo-petrol cars now priced in the Rs 9 - 10 lakh bracket, the festive season could mark the beginning of a golden run for the brand.
