KTM Duke 160 Mileage From Brand's Internal Testing Out- More Than Competition?

KTM's latest entry into the premium commuter space, the KTM Duke 160, is already turning heads with its sharp design and lively performance. Launched earlier this month at Rs. 1.85 lakh (ex-showroom), the new Duke slots below the 200 Duke, but aims to deliver the same thrills in a more affordable and efficient package. Now, KTM has officially revealed the mileage figures of the 160 Duke, and the numbers put it squarely in the crosshairs of its closest rival, the Yamaha MT15.

Powering the KTM 160 Duke is a 164cc, single-cylinder, SOHC, liquid-cooled engine producing 19 hp and 15.5 Nm of torque, paired with a 6-speed gearbox. KTM has developed this motor from the same family as the 200 Duke's engine, but reworked internals have made it a full kilogram lighter. According to KTM, the torque delivery has been optimised to provide 80% of peak torque below 4,000 rpm, making it friendlier for city riding without sacrificing its sporty character. Yamaha's MT15, in comparison, uses a 155cc liquid-cooled SOHC engine generating 18.4 hp and 14.1 Nm, also paired with a 6-speed gearbox. On paper, the KTM edges ahead in outright numbers, but Yamaha's VVA tech gives it a wide powerband.

Fuel efficiency has always been a critical factor in this segment, and KTM has made significant strides with the 160 Duke. The company's internal tests claim the bike delivers around 40 kmpl, which is about 10% more efficient than the 200 Duke. The ARAI-certified mileage figure is still awaited, but KTM's claimed figure puts it closer to the Yamaha MT15, which officially returns 47.94 kmpl (ARAI-certified).

KTM Duke 160- Features
Being positioned as a budget-friendly sports bike, the KTM 160 Duke does miss out on a few premium features found in higher-capacity Dukes. The bike comes equipped with a 5-inch LCD console that supports Bluetooth connectivity via the KTM Connect app, offering turn-by-turn navigation, call management (accept/decline), and other ride data. In terms of lighting, it gets a full-LED setup, including headlights, taillights, and blinkers, which not only enhance visibility but also add to its aggressive design. However, when compared to rivals like the Yamaha MT15, the feature list feels somewhat limited, especially with the absence of more advanced rider aids or TFT instrumentation that many enthusiasts were hoping for.
Verdict
The KTM 160 Duke strikes a balance between performance and efficiency, positioning itself as a stylish yet practical alternative in the entry-level premium motorcycle space. While Yamaha's MT15 continues to boast slightly better mileage numbers, KTM's claimed 40 kmpl is impressive considering its stronger output and Duke DNA. For enthusiasts who value spirited performance with acceptable efficiency and are fanboys of the orange legacy, the 160 Duke might just be the sweet spot KTM needed in its lineup.
