New Hyundai Compact SUV Spotted, Could Be Inster EV

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Compact electric SUV for urban buyers.
  • Level 2 ADAS safety features possible.
  • Fully digital driver display expected.
  • Expected 10-inch touchscreen infotainment.
  • Likely rival to Tata Punch EV.

Hyundai appears to be gearing up to strengthen its electric SUV portfolio in India, as a new compact electric SUV has been spotted testing on public roads in Chandigarh, with a similar sighting reported earlier in Mumbai. A heavily camouflaged test mule was seen at a charging station, hinting strongly at an EV powertrain. This model is likely to be the upcoming Inster EV, which could emerge as a direct rival to the Tata Punch EV. Despite the heavy camouflage, a few design details are evident. The SUV features a tall and upright stance, somewhat reminiscent of the new-generation Venue. It gets sleek front and rear lighting elements that appear to follow a segmented LED pattern, while the headlamps are positioned low on the bumper. At the rear, vertically mounted reflectors are integrated into the bumper. Additional highlights include flush-fitting door handles, black roof rails, a prominent roof spoiler with an integrated high-mounted stop lamp, and a shark fin antenna. The test vehicle was also seen riding on steel wheels, likely sized between 15 and 16 inches.

Interior

Interior details remain undisclosed for now, as there are no clear images of the cabin. However, based on Hyundai's recent product strategy, the SUV is expected to feature a large touchscreen infotainment system measuring at least 10 inches, a fully digital instrument cluster, and the possibility of Level 2 ADAS features.

Hyundai had earlier confirmed during its October 2025 investor presentation that it plans to introduce two new SUVs in India. This test mule closely aligns with the brand's strategy of launching a locally developed compact electric SUV, expected to offer advanced infotainment, Level 2 ADAS, and a practical driving range suitable for highway usage. It is also likely to be positioned below the Creta segment, making it a more accessible EV option for a wider set of buyers.

Verdict

Hyundais upcoming compact electric SUV could be a game-changer in the affordable EV space, especially if it undercuts larger rivals while offering modern tech and usable range. With strong design cues and expected premium features, it has the potential to significantly disrupt the entry-level electric SUV segment in India.
