1 - Volkswagen Polo (April 2022)

Undoubtedly the most iconic hatchback of recent times; the VW Polo got off the production line. Yes, the German car maker discontinued the Polo brand in India. The discontinuation came in April 2022 but with an emotional note. Polo has been a testament among car enthusiasts for more than a decade. All thanks to its solid build, plaint ride, & on-point handling. However, it has not undergone any major change since its launch in India. In spite of introducing a new-gen polo, VW pulled off the plug on it. VW is focusing on localized products like Virtus & Taigun. Meanwhile, there is no solid information about its comeback any time soon.

2 - Hyundai Santro (May 2022)

Another shocker was the discontinuation of Santro. Hyundai has been trying to play on Santro's legacy. However, in May 2022, the Korean company decided to pull the plug on the Santro. It has been suffering poor sales for a long time. All thanks to its high pricing that was already close to the bigger Grand i10 NIOS. However, the cute-looking Santro was not seen as a long-termer by the management. Before it was discontinued, Santro was on sale with the 1.2-lt petrol engine as seen on the Aura C-sedan. It also came with a factory-fitted CNG bi-fuel option.

3 - Renault Duster (Feburary 2022)

Renault Duster was the original compact SUV. In fact, it started this segment in India with its launch. Renault used its most reliable 1.5-lt diesel engine on it & the decision proved to be fruitful. However, as time passed the Duster brand started to fade. Even the company tried to keep up with its rivals with a mid-life facelift. But, the high spare parts cost and service costs led to a decline in sales. The petrol variant of it was an oil burner and hence that also did not find many buyers. In February 2022, Renault finally halted the production of Duster in India. However, the good news is revolving all over the internet that Duster is all set to make a comeback. If this does happen, it won't be any time before the end of 2023 that we see the new Duster on road.

4 - Mahindra Alturas G4 (December 2022)

The discontinuation of the Alturas G4 has to be one of the most predictable news. Mahindra took over Ssangyong a few years ago. While they let go of that brand, the company does use the resources gained rightfully. While Tivoli's platform was used to develop the XUV300, the Rexton turned into the Alturas. Mahindra tailor-made the Alturas as per the requirements of the Indian customers. However, its main rival i.e. Toyota Fortuner kept selling multiple times more in terms of volume. Even the discount schemes do not work much for it. Hence, the SUV was finally called off in December 2022. Meanwhile, Mahindra showed its upcoming SUV details on the launch of Scorpio N. This upcoming SUV can possibly a new Alturas. It is suspected to launch sometime in 2024.

5 - Maruti Suzuki S-Cross (October 2022)

Maruti Suzuki S-Cross

Adding to this list is the Maruti S-Cross. Maruti's crossover eventually died a slow death due to its slow sales. Additionally, Maruti tried to revive the S-Cross by introducing a mid-life facelift as well. But, nothing worked concretely because of its pricing and segment confusion. Most customers opted for the bigger Vitara Brezza SUV. Hence, Maruti decided to pull the plug on it. Additionally, a new crossover is also on its way to India. It is going to be called either Flash or Blaze. Maruti will debut this new crossover at the Indian Auto Expo 2023. This new crossover is being anticipated as a possible replacement for the S-Cross. Our sources also tell us that Maruti might offer an optional AWD on this car.

Verdict

With the discontinuation of all of these cars, the manufacturers have gone front foot in the development of new products. However, some of these will never make a comeback and hence they are bound to become a concrete part of Indian automotive history.
