Tata Safri EV Spotted On Test; Harrier EV Testing Underway As Well

Tata Motors currently holds a significant share of the electric car market in India, thanks to models like the Tiago EV, Tigor EV, Nexon EV, and the recently unveiled Punch EV. This success has solidified Tata's position as a leader in the electric vehicle (EV) sector. Expanding its electric vehicle lineup further, Tata is now gearing up to introduce the electric version of Tata Safari and Harrier EV in the mid-size SUV segment.

Both the Safari EV and Harrier EV will feature an enhanced version of Tata's Acti.ev platform, showcasing the company's commitment to electric mobility. These upcoming models are currently undergoing testing, as indicated by sightings of test mules. Recently, a test mule of the Tata Safari EV was spotted in Bengaluru, Karnataka, although the spy shots only provide a side view of the upcoming vehicle.

The silhouette looks familiar to the ICE variants with minimal changes. You can notice the conventional handles instead of the flush type that you get with the ICE variants. Apart from this, the metal cutouts and the bumpers feel similar along with the usual alloy wheels. The alloy wheel design will be updated with an air-drag reduction design to improve the electric range.

Battery & Range

In terms of powertrain, the Tata Safari EV will utilize the new modular Acti.ev platform. This platform supports various configurations, including single-motor front-wheel drive (FWD), rear-wheel drive (RWD), and dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD). Given its flagship status, we anticipate that at least one variant of the Safari EV will feature a dual-motor AWD layout. Additionally, it's likely that at least one EV will have rear-wheel drive. Furthermore, we hope that lower variants equipped with a single motor layout will feature RWD instead of FWD. As for battery capacity, it's expected to be around 60 kWh or possibly even higher. This could ultimately mean a range of about 500 km on a single charge.

While the launch is expected by mid-2025, it will face off against the Mahindra XUV700 EV, and other big-size EVs in the space.

Verdict

The Safari EV will be the flagship offering from the brand under its new Tata.ev dealership line. While it could offer some groundbreaking characteristic like an AWD system, the brand value of Safari will help it to take-off right from its initial days. However, we need to wait until more infortmation comes out to paint a better picture.
