Volkswagen has finally revealed the much anticipated ID4 electric SUV. It will hit global markets later this year and India launch is expected in 2022. Volkswagen also showcased the ID Crozz concept at the 2020 Auto Expo and it garnered much interest. With the 77 kWh battery pack under its belly, the ID4 offers a certified range of up to 520 km.

Volkswagen aims to revolutionise its global portfolio with the ID range of electric cars. The first pure-electric model was the ID3 underpinned by VW's MED platform and now we have the ID4. The production model is much reminiscent of the ID Crozz concept and sports the flowing contemporary design. The tapering roofline at the back gives it a coupe-esque stance and it does attract eyeballs. The smooth flowing lines offer good aerodynamics and drag coefficient of 0.28. Top-end trims also get LED matrix headlights and 3D LED taillights. The flush-fit door handles don't pop out and have the dedicated request sensors to open the doors.

Unlike its Czech cousin - the Enyak iV, the ID4 is only offered in RWD layout and with a single battery option. The 77kWh battery (Net) sits under the floor and powers the rear-mounted electric motor. The electric motor belts out 204 PS and sprints the ID4 from nought to 100 in just 8.5 seconds and the top whack is limited to 160 km/h. Talking about charging, VW offers its own charging chain called "We Charge". With the 125 kW charger in place, the ID4 can be charged under 30 minutes to cover over 320 km.

Surprisingly, despite the ID4 being RWD only, there is no front storage space on offer. Volkswagen also claims that the ID4 can tackle some decent trails thanks to its RWD powertrain. Moving to the inside, the design is minimalist along with some quirks. For instance, the minuscule driver's display gets the integrated rotary gear selector, something similar to what we saw in the BMW i3S.

Moreover, we get the augmented-reality based heads up display which gives live navigation instructions with specific lane markings. Moving to the 12-inch central touchscreen which has ditched physical buttons. The infotainment also gets its personal assistant and gets activated by saying "Hello ID". The air-con controls are integrated into the infotainment and we get touch-based shortcut buttons just below the free-standing touchscreen unit. The upholstery and colours are contemporary and the ID4 is practical as well. The luggage carrying capacity is 543 - 1575 litre depending on the rear seat position.
Close to home, Volkswagen India is on full gas with its products. We recently saw the launch of the T-Roc and it got sold out in a couple of months. Volkswagen is also prepping up to unveil the Taigun in the Indian market. The Volkswagen ID4 electric SUV is expected to hit Indian shores in 2022 - more details on the same will follow later.
