Tata Harrier EV vs BYD Atto 3 - Battery Packs

Tata Harrier EV

Let's begin with Tata Harrier EV, the latest e-SUV launched at a starting from Rs 21.49 lakh (ex-showroom), built on a new Acti.ev+ platform, which is esentially the same Acti.ev, but has be re-engineered to support QUAD wheel drive -meaning two motors, each powering two wheels. Moreover, the side panels have been made more rigid, further improving the SUV's overall build quality. On the battery packs - Tata offers two options - 65 kWh and 75 kWh, where the first one power to the rear wheels and second one makes for the Quad Wheel Drive.

Talking about power figures - the rear motor produces 238 PS, while the front motor generates 158 PS. The torque remains the same with both battery packs at 504 Nm. Based on these power figures, we believe this is more of an RWD car, with the front wheels providing assistance rather than taking full charge. Moreover, the 65 kWh battery pack will come with an RWD drivetrain, while the 75 kWh will offer a QWD drivetype.

The 75 kWh battery pack has an ARAI-tested MIDC range of 627 km, while the real-world (C75) range is 480 km to 505 km. Tata is yet to announce the range figures of 65 kWh pack. Now, let's talk about the charging speed. Using a 7.2 KW AC charger, the battery charges from 0 to 100 per cent in 10.7 hrs. It also supports DC fast charging of up to 120 KW, completing 20% to 80% in just 25 minutes. However, in India, finding such a fast charger remains a challenge in itself.

BYD Atto 3

BYD Atto 3 has two battery packs: one with a capacity of 49.98 kWh and the other with 60.48 kWh. The standard pack offers 203 PS and 310 Nm of torque, with an ARAI-certified range of 468 km. With a DC fast charger, it takes 50 minutes to charge from 0 to 80%. The second, larger pack has a claimed range of 521 km, and the power output is similar to the first one. As for its charging time, it takes 50 minutes to go from 0 to 80% with a DC charger and 9.5 to 10 hours with an AC charger. Lastly, Atto 3 only comes with a FWD drivetrain.

Clearly, the Tata Harrier EV is ahead in terms of power and range of offers, and it also offers Quad-wheel drive. These factors make the Harrier a more attractive car, catering to a wide section of people.

Verdict

Tata Harrier EV is a clear winner in this comparison based on all the details available so far. We haven't driven any of those cars, but the numbers on Harrier are impressive and all the tech.
