2026 Mahindra Thar Facelift Spotted in Final Tests; Launch Next Week

Mahindra's iconic 3-door off-roader is entering the home stretch of its development cycle. Fresh spy shots of the Thar facelift show a test mule that looks all but ready for production, and with the SUV's public unveiling now just days away, this is likely the last we'll see of it in camouflage.

Front Profile Looks Similar to the Roxx

Mahindra Thar

The biggest visual overhaul is happening at the nose. Mahindra appears to be borrowing design cues liberally from the 5-door Thar Roxx to give the 3-door a more premium stance. Test mules have already been caught with a chunky, layered grille treatment echoing the Roxx's design language, along with round LED projector headlamps wrapped in C-shaped daytime running lights, a clear visual link between the two models.

Interestingly, not every mule has worn the same face. At least one recent sighting showed a different grille pattern altogether, which was a simpler five-slot layout with a slim horizontal bar that could double up as a badge mount. That inconsistency across test vehicles hints at something more than a single facelift: Mahindra may be planning multiple trims or special editions, each with its own front-end identity, rather than a one-size-fits-all update. The bumper is also expected to be shared with the Roxx, bringing along LED fog lamps that adjust based on steering input for better visibility around corners.

Rear End Remains Largely the Same

Mahindra hasn't tampered much with the Thar's signature rear as the car still has the tailgate-mounted spare wheel and the vertically split tailgate. Both parts of the SUV's identity since launch are carried over untouched. Expect only minor tweaks to the tail lamp graphics and bumper detailing rather than a complete redesign. The side profile, too, remains largely familiar, which suggests Mahindra is treating this as a targeted refresh rather than a ground-up reskin.

One area that has visibly changed is the wheels. The facelifted Thar rides on a new set of alloys with a five-spoke pattern, which is apparently a departure from the outgoing design, even if the diameter is expected to stay in familiar territory.

A Meaningfully Updated Cabin

Thar

Inside, the changes read like a genuine step up rather than a cosmetic touch-up. Word is that the facelift will swap the current analogue dials for a fully digital instrument cluster, add auto climate control in place of manual AC, and introduce an auto-dimming inside rearview mirror. Front seats are tipped to get ventilation along with perforated leatherette covering, and the cabin could also pick up nicer soft-touch materials borrowed from the Roxx's more upmarket interior.

Safety kit gets a meaningful bump, too. Expect a 360-degree camera system, rear disc brakes as standard, and front and side parking sensors to join the reversing camera and sensors already on offer. Reports suggest Mahindra could even offer Level 2 ADAS on the range-topping variant, a first for the 3-door Thar, and a feature that would bring it in line with rivals that have already gone down this road.

Same Engines, New Steering Setup

Don't expect any surprises under the hood. The facelift is set to retain the existing three-engine lineup: a 1.5-litre turbo diesel producing close to 119 hp for those who want a simpler, rear-wheel-drive manual, a 2.0-litre turbo petrol, and a 2.2-litre turbo diesel - the latter two offering both a torque-converter automatic and proper 4WD capability. One mechanical change worth noting is a likely switch from hydraulic to electric power steering, which should make the Thar noticeably easier to manoeuvre at low speeds and in parking lots without touching its off-road character.

When Can You Buy One?

Mahindra hasn't put out an official date yet, but everything points to a launch in the coming days, with the SUV expected to reach dealerships in time for the festive season. Pricing will almost certainly nudge upward from the current range, given the added features, though Mahindra will likely try to keep the jump modest to protect the Thar's value-for-money appeal against newer rivals in the segment.

With the test mules now wearing what looks like near-final production trim, the wait for an official reveal shouldn't be a long one.
