KEY HIGHLIGHTS
- BYD Seal is larger and more performance-focused
- Mercedes CLA Electric offers a superior range and faster charging
- Seal gets a powerful AWD variant with 530 hp
The premium electric sedan space in India is gradually expanding, and the arrival of the Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric has added a new dimension to the segment. While it sits higher up in terms of pricing, the BYD Seal emerges as a strong alternative, offering competitive specifications at a more accessible cost. Both models bring distinct strengths to the table, making this comparison a closer look at how they differ across dimensions, performance, range, and overall value. Mercedes CLA EV vs BYD Seal: Design & Dimensions

| Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric | BYD Seal | |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 4,723 mm | 4,800 mm |
| Width | 1,855 mm | 1,875 mm |
| Height | 1,468 mm | 1,460 mm |
| Wheelbase | 2,790 mm | 2,920 mm |
| Boot Space | 405 litres | 400 litres |
| Frunk | 101 litres | 53 litres |
In terms of size, the BYD Seal clearly takes the lead. It is longer, wider, and has a significantly longer wheelbase than the Mercedes CLA Electric, which translates to a stronger road presence and potentially better cabin space. However, the CLA Electric counters with slightly greater height and better practicality. It offers marginally more boot space and a significantly larger frunk compared to the Seal. Now coming to the design, both sedans take a different approach to visuals, where the Seal is clearly more sporty and offers sharper and more aggressive front facia, whereas the CLA does it in a more sophisticated form with its smooth curves and a very Merc-like way. While you may like either one of them, I like the Seal just a little bit better, not to forget, its bigger dimensions add to its allure as well.

Powertrain & Performance: Seal Takes The Lead, But....
| Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric | BYD Seal | |
|---|---|---|
| Battery Options | 58 kWh Rear 85 kWh rear | 61.44 kWh Rear 82.56 kWh Rear 82.56 kWh Rear+ Front |
| Power Output | 224 hp 272 hp | 204 hp 313 hp 530 hp |
| Torque | 335 Nm | 310 Nm / 360 Nm / 670 Nm |
| Drive Type | RWD | RWD / AWD |
| Gearbox | 2-speed transmission | Single-speed |
| 0100 km/h | 7.5 sec 6.7 sec | 7.5 sec 5.9 sec 3.8 sec |
| Range (WLTP) | 542 km 792 km | 460 km / 570 km / 520 km |
| Charging Speed | Up to 320 kW | Up to 150 kW |
When it comes to outright performance, the BYD Seal has a clear advantage, especially in its higher variants. While both models offer rear-wheel-drive configurations in their standard versions, the Seal also comes with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup that produces up to 530 hp and 670 Nm, delivering extremely quick acceleration. The CLA Electric, on the other hand, offers a more refined and efficiency-focused setup. It produces slightly higher output than the base Seal in comparable variants and features a unique 2-speed gearbox, which helps balance acceleration and efficiency more effectively than the single-speed systems typically seen in EVs.

Range is where the CLA Electric establishes a strong lead. Thanks to its aerodynamic design and high drivetrain efficiency, it delivers significantly higher claimed range figures across both battery options compared to the Seal. Charging performance is another area where Mercedes has an advantage. The CLA Electric uses an advanced 800V architecture, allowing for much faster DC charging speeds of up to 320 kW, resulting in shorter charging times. In comparison, the BYD Seal supports lower charging speeds, which translates to longer wait times for similar charging levels.

Mercedes CLA EV vs BYD Seal: Price
| Mercedes CLA Electric | BYD Seal |
| Rs 55 lakh (200 Standard Range) | Rs 41 lakh (Dynamic) |
| Rs 59 lakh (250+ Long Range) | Rs 45.7 lakh (Premium) |
| Rs 64 lakh (250+ Launch Edition) | Rs 53.15 lakh (Performance) |
Pricing is one of the biggest differentiators between the two. The BYD Seal starts significantly lower than the CLA Electric, with a gap of around Rs 14 lakh at the entry level. Even at the higher end, the Seal remains considerably more affordable, undercutting comparable CLA variants by over Rs 13 lakh. Interestingly, the top-spec Seal Performance variant, despite offering significantly higher performance, is still priced below even the base CLA Electric, making it a strong value proposition.
