MG Secures Comet EV-Based Baojun Yep EV SUV Patent In India- Details

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Baojun Yep EV SUV slated for launch by 2025
  • Production to be heavily localized
  • Shares platform with the MG Comet EV

Around a month ago, we got to know about the incarnation of the Chinese Baojun Yep electric SUV in India under the MG branding. Now, MG Motors has obtained the patent for the same in India, which hints at an imminent launch in the future. At a glance, it comes across as the MG Comet EV's elder sibling, with similar proportions, but with SUV touches.

Let's look at what the future MG EV SUV holds for the Indian market.

Baojun Yep Electric SUV With MG Branding Soon

The design patent reveals that MG's rebranded Baojun Yep for India shares a similar design to the China-spec model. The only noticeable differences would be the MG badges at the front and rear. Similar to the MG Comet's resemblance to the Wuling Air EV in China, the Baojun Yep's Indian version is likely to remain largely unchanged, with minor cosmetic distinctions, such as body-colored bumpers for the Comet in India and dual-tone bumpers with black inserts for the China-spec model.

However, while the bonnet of MG Comet EV sloped down, this will feature an upright chunky flat stance for the feels of an SUV.

The Yep is a really compact SUV, measuring just under 3,381mm in length, 1,685mm in width, and 1,721mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,110mm. When compared to the Comet, the Yep is 407mm longer, 180mm wider, and 81mm taller, with its wheelbase 100mm longer.

MG COMET EV BASED BAOJUN YEP EV SUV

The exteriors of the Baojun Yep EV SUV are reminiscent of an iconic American SUV - the Ford Bronco. The boxy design and wide view give it an impression of the iconic vehicle, while prominent wheel arches, a chunky bumper, 15-inch alloy wheels, roof rails, and a symmetrically proportional rear window add to its rugged and stylish appeal.

The taillight assembly gets a vertical placement. But that's not what will catch your attention, it is the LCD display screen at the back called the 'Car Watch' that displays custom messages using a mobile app, which is an interesting element. But this feature is an optional add-on, for those who fancy a personalized message for the highway peeps.

Powertrain

The Baojun Yep EV SUV features a single electric motor mounted on the rear axle, delivering 68hp and 140Nm of torque, with a top speed of 100 kmph. Its power comes from a 28.1kWh lithium-ion phosphate battery, offering a claimed range of 303 km.

For charging, the battery can reach 30-80 percent capacity in 35 minutes with DC fast charging, and it takes 8.5 hours with AC charging to go from 20-80 percent. In comparison, the MG Comet EV's 17.1kWh battery takes 5 hours to charge from 20-80 percent, but it lacks a fast charging option. However, the Indian spec version might have different figures and specs.

Verdict

With the positive reception of the MG Comet EV, the inspired SUV is coming to India soon. As the electric vehicle segment gains traction in India, the MG Comet EV stands as a significant step forward for the carmaker. Since the MG Comet already is the second best monthly  seller for the brand last month, this further strengthens it's portfolio.
