KEY HIGHLIGHTS
- KTM 390 Adventure R India launch expected early 2026
- Long-travel suspension, taller seat height, and higher ground clearance
- Same 399cc engine with 46 PS and 39 Nm to be offered
KTM is set to raise the bar in the sub-400cc adventure motorcycle space with the India launch of the 390 Adventure R in 2026. Unlike the current 390 Adventure sold in India, which leans more toward touring duties, the upcoming Adventure R is aimed squarely at riders seeking serious off-road capability. The international-spec model will make its Indian debut during the KTM Adventure Rally scheduled between February 27 and March 3, 2026, marking a significant moment for off-road enthusiasts. Importantly, KTM is expected to offer the 390 Adventure R in limited numbers, possibly through an order-based model, positioning it as a niche but highly desirable offering rather than a mass-market product. What Sets The KTM 390 Adventure R Apart?

The biggest differentiator of the KTM 390 Adventure R lies in its off-road-focused hardware upgrades. Unlike the standard model, the R variant borrows heavily from KTM's Enduro lineup, making it far more capable when the terrain turns rough. At the heart of this transformation is the long-travel suspension setup, which offers a substantial 230mm of travel at both ends, a notable increase over the regular 390 Adventure. This setup is designed to absorb harsh impacts, tackle deep ruts, and maintain composure on challenging trails.

Wheel configuration also sees a major shift. The Adventure R rides on a 21-inch front and 18-inch rear spoked wheel setup, shod with aggressive Mitas knobby tyres, reinforcing its dirt-first intent. This change significantly improves stability and traction on loose surfaces.
Increased Ground Clearance, Taller Seat Height
Thanks to the revised suspension and wheel setup, the KTM 390 Adventure R gains a commanding 272mm of ground clearance, making it far more trail-ready than the standard bike. Seat height also increases to 870mm, clearly signalling that this motorcycle is intended for experienced riders who prioritise capability over ease of access. These changes underline KTM's intent to create a motorcycle that feels at home on demanding trails rather than just gravel roads or highways.
Engine and Features: Familiar Set-up At Work

Mechanically, the KTM 390 Adventure R remains unchanged and that's not a bad thing. It continues with the 399cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine, producing 46 PS and 39 Nm, paired with a six-speed gearbox. The motor is already known for its strong mid-range and responsive character, making it well-suited for both off-road riding and highway stints.
The feature list is also expected to mirror the standard model, which already comes well-equipped with ride modes, traction control, cornering ABS, TFT display, and smartphone connectivity.

Expected Pricing
Given its specialised hardware and limited availability, the KTM 390 Adventure R is expected to command a premium over the standard 390 Adventure, which currently retails at around Rs 3.94 lakh (ex-showroom). Expect pricing to land in the region of Rs 4.20- 4.30 lakh, positioning it as one of the most hardcore small-capacity adventure motorcycles available in India.
Verdict
The KTM 390 Adventure R finally delivers what many purists have been asking for, a compact ADV that doesn't compromise on off-road ability. With long-travel suspension, proper spoke wheels, increased ground clearance, and KTM's proven performance package, the Adventure R could offer something more than what the standard variant offers. While it may not be for everyone, riders who live for trails and challenging terrain will find the wait for 2026 well worth it.
