Volvo has launched its much-anticipated EX30 in India at an ex-showroom price of Rs 41 lakh. This SUV now serves as their entry-level electric car, positioned below the EX40 and EC40. The EX30 faces a tough segment, as its direct rival, the BMW iX1 LWB, has been selling in strong numbers and has become a successful product in a short span of time. So, does this new car have what it takes to divert customers from big players like BMW, BYD, or Mercedes? First, let's put it up against the iX1 and see. The numbers are all taken from official websites, and they clearly show that the Volvo has more juice. Customers who love an engaging drive will prefer it over the BMW, which is contradictory, as this German brand is known for making the best performance cars. However, here they have focused on providing a better range. Additionally, the iX1 LWB is a FWD SUV, which is again rare for the brand, as they rarely opt for this drivetype.

One common negative point for both vehicles is that they are available with just one battery pack, which also indicates that they are catering to customers who want a premium electric experience with minimal range anxiety.

Charging Time - With an AC charger, the Volvo EX30 goes from 0 to 100% in 8 hours, while using a 175 kW DC fast charger, its battery goes from 10% to 80% in just 28 minutes. In comparison, the BMW iX1 takes 6.5 hours to charge from 0 to 100% with an AC charger and 30 minutes with a 130 kW DC fast charger to go from 10% to 80%.

Features

The Volvo EX30 comes with a 12.3-inch floating infotainment display, which also shows the vehicle speed, current gear, and range, as there isn't a dedicated driver display. The central panel is uncluttered, with AC controls integrated into the screen. Additionally, it offers wireless phone connectivity, including Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Other important features are:

  • Multi-zone Climate Control
  • Panoramic Glass-Roof
  • Steering Mounted Controls
  • ADAS
  • Powered Tail-Gate
  • Google Built-In
  • Digital Keys
  • Four USB-C Ports
  • Wireless Charger
  • 12V Power Outlet
  • Harman Kardon Premium Sound

The BMW iX1 LWB interior is well-built, practical, and packed with the latest features. The center of attention is the BMW Curved Display, which consists of a 10.25-inch instrument cluster and a 10.7-inch infotainment screen. This infotainment system runs on the brand's latest OS 9, allowing customers to customize the screen to their preference. Now, let's take a look at the major features inside:

  • Panoramic Glass Roof
  • Harman Kardon 12 Speakers
  • M-Sport Interior Highlights
  • Digital Key
  • Parking Assistant
  • ADAS
  • Electronic Parking Brake
  • Adaptive LED Headlights

Missing Things

The biggest drawback of Volvo EX30 is that - everything happens from that floating screen, which isn't easy to operate, and deteriorates the overall experience. For example, even the glove box can't open manually because it too is operated via this screen. Plus, there isn't seat ventialtion or even massaging functions. Sad part is, this premium car misses out on rear armrest, rear air-vents, and the overall space at back ins't good.

Verdict

The biggest USP of the BMW iX1 LWB is its long wheelbase, which translates to exceptional rear legroom, making it a perfect vehicle for families. Moreover, the boot space is 490 L, ideal for family trips. On the other hand, the Volvo EX30 is best suited for those looking for a fun-to-drive electric car, especially if you dont often travel with passengers. In the end, the iX1 LWB offers a well-rounded package and provides more overall value than the EX30.
