Attract Rs 500 Fine From Mumbai Police For Not Wearing Rear Seat Belt
  • The rear seat belt rule was earlier from November 1, however, it is now pushed to November 11
  • All passengers sitting inside the car will have to wear a seat belt
  • Those who will not obey this rule will attract a fine of Rs 500

Recently, the sad demise of Cyrus Mistry (Former Chairman of Tata Groups) in a tragic car accident was a shocker to the country. Several reasons citing the accident were highlighted, however, the most prominent one was that if the person was wearing a rear seat belt, chances are that he could have been saved. In fact, another colleague of Mr Mistry who was with him in the rear also passed away in that accident.

Now, according to the new rules, you can attract a fine of Rs 500 if caught by Mumbai Police for not wearing the rear seat belt. This rule will be mandated from November 11. Earlier, it was to be put from November 1 itself.

This additional time will give awareness to the people of Mumbai about the importance of wearing rear seat belts and also how they can escape Rs 500 fine and protect their lives. Once this rule is regulated from November 11, Mumbai Police will start cracking down on offenders.

This rule has always been there in the Motor Vehicles Act, however, it was not that serious at all. Earlier only the driver and front co-passenger had to wear the seat belt. Now, not just Mumbai but other states too are following the rear seat belt rule.

With the rising number of road accidents in India, authorities are acting up and scrutinising the rules so there be fewer road accidents. This rear seat belt measure by Mumbai Police is a strong move and it should be mandated by every state in India.
