Mercedes-Benz G-Class, originally manufactured as an off-roader for the military in the 1970s, became a status symbol and a celebrity favorite within a few decades. Today, it is seen more in posh suburbs and the parking lots of high-end parties than in jungles, where it actually belongs. In 1979, Mercedes-Benz capitalized on its cool factor and launched the 2-door G-Class Cabriolet, which quickly achieved cult status. Mercedes-Benz G-Class cabriolet has never been on sale in India but almost almost everyone has seen this car photos on print, as this vehicle has been used by Pope and is offially and famously known as Popemobile, and Papa G. First introduced in 1979 with 2 door setup and a soft top which was sold till 2013. Post that, Mercedes has brought its super-luxurious limited unit iterations such as Maybach G650 Landaulet, which never saw the sun in India but was also not legal for several countries. But it sold out in no time, because its was a rare gem of automotive machine.

So, that was a quick overview of the legend, and now to the latest news - Mercedes-Benz is teasing a new-age G-Class Cabriolet, which might come to India for the very first time. According to an international automotive site, the brand has confirmed that it will be sold in almost every market.

The interesting part about this teaser is that, even though the photo is dark and shadowy, it's still quite evident that the G-Cabriolet features four doors - adopting the same body style as the last Landaulet. Moreover, considering Mercedes' recent unveilings and global trends, it could arrive in an electric avatar or with the 4.0L twin-turbo V8. If it's electric, expect a 116 kWh battery pack delivering 580 bhp and 1,164 Nm of torque. Lastly, the official debut is expected at the Munich Motor Show in 2025.

Mercedes-Benz is bringing back the over-the-top flavor of the G-Class, and if it makes its way to India, it could easily be the coolest-looking tank on wheels. That said, this isn't going to be a practical car - so if youre expecting generous legroom or headroom, better not get your hopes up. Still, let's keep our fingers crossed for its India debut.
