Toyota Kirloskar Motors (TKM) has finally announced the pricing of its latest offering for the Indian market, the Innova Hycross. The range starts from Rs. 18.30 lakh (ex-showroom), going up to Rs. 28.97 lakh (ex-showroom). As the MPV is offered in two distinctive versions, a petrol and a strong hybrid, with a considerable price difference, it often becomes quite confusing to make the right choice. So here we are with a comparative analysis of Toyota Innova Hycross petrol vs strong hybrid.

Underneath the hood, the Hycross petrol uses a 2.0 litre naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 172 bhp and 205 Nm of peak torque, mated with a CVT gearbox. On the other hand, in the strong hybrid guise, the MPV draws power from a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine which runs on the Atkinson cycle and comes paired with the brand's fifth-gen strong hybrid system. The combined power output from the system is rated at 186 bhp and 206 Nm of peak torque and the power is channelled to the front wheels using an e-Drive transmission. The claimed fuel efficiency of the petrol powertrain stands at 16.13 kmpl, while the strong hybrid returns 23.24 kmpl.

The Innova Hycross Petrol is offered in two broad variants i.e. G-SLG and GX, both of which can be bought in 7/8 seater layouts. On the other end of the spectrum, the strong hybrid is available in 3 trim levels, i.e. VX, ZX and ZX (O). Amongst these, only the VX comes with the option of 7/8 seats, while the other only gets a 7-seater layout.

In terms of features, the petrol version of Innova Hycross comes kitted with the all basic equipment such as manual AC controls, electrically adjustable ORVMs, fabric seats, reclining function for 2nd and 3rd-row seats, 8-inch infotainment system on the higher trim, 4 speakers, push-button start, 16-inch steel/ alloy wheels and a 4.2 inch MID amongst others.

The Strong Hybrid version, on the other hand, comes loaded with all the possible advanced tech and safety features. To begin with, it gets 17/18 inch alloy wheels, a full LED setup for the head and tail lamps, a panoramic sunroof on ZX and ZX (O) trim, a 2-zone automatic climate control with pollution filter, a powered driver seat with ventilation and memory function, powered Ottoman 2nd row seats, quilted Dark Chestnut Art leather seats with perforation, 9 speaker JBL premium audio system and more.

The range of Innova Hycross petrol starts from Rs. 18.30 lakh, while the strong hybrid's entry-level variant costs Rs. 24.01 lakh (ex-showroom). This accounts for a price difference of Rs. 5.71 lakh. When comparing the top-end trims, the difference is further intensified to Rs. 9.77 lakh and it will easily hover around 11-12 lakh in the on-road cost. So what is this premium charged for? 1st, the strong hybrid powertrain and the long list of modern tech features on offer, make up for the second.

Till now we are very clear about the differences between the Innova Hycross Petrol and Strong Hybrid. The buying decision ultimately boils down to the price tag of a vehicle and the case is no different here. The price difference between the two goes up to Rs. 9.77 lakh (ex-showroom). For this extra money, you get a more frugal powertrain which comes with a claimed mileage of 23.24 kmpl and a ton of features along with a better exterior and interior package. The difference in power figures between the two is not that much, however, the strong hybrid can have better acceleration due to the presence of an electric motor.

If you are on a tighter budget and don't care much about the creature comforts, the Innova Hycross Petrol should be your preferred choice as it is quite a value-for-money package. The Strong Hybrid version is the way to go for buyers free of any budget constraints and who want an opulent experience for the family. The premium for the hybrid version is quite steep, however, the feature-loaded cabin, top-notch quality levels and staggering mileage numbers along with a smooth driving experience will make it worth the price. Having said that, both the petrol and strong hybrid share the same Toyota pedigree and comes with the brand's trusted after-sales service, good resale value, bulletproof reliability and the brand value associated with the Innova nameplate.
