Suzuki unveiled the next-gen Maruti Swift at the Tokyo Motor Show yesterday with significant visual updates. While the exterior and interior updates were known, the engine specs were not clear. Now, according to some reports, the engine is ready for a major change as well.

A new engine is set to replace the current one and let's get into the details available at the moment.

2024 Maruti Swift: New Engine, Better Mileage?

Suzuki is set to introduce its new Z-Series engine in 2024, debuting in the fourth-generation Swift. Codenamed Z12, this engine is a 1.2-liter, 3-cylinder, naturally aspirated unit that will replace the current K-series 1.2-liter, 4-cylinder engine in the Swift. While detailed specifications are not yet available, the company has high fuel efficiency targets for the Z-Series engine. Power output is expected to be similar to the K12 unit, but torque is likely to be higher.

The Z12 engine is expected to offer better low-end torque compared to the K12's free-revving nature. Additionally, it will be lighter and emit fewer emissions, aligning with tightening emissions regulations. The Tokyo Motor Show showcased a hybrid version of the Swift, but it's expected that the production Swift in India will feature a regular engine.

Another area of hype is around the fuel economy. According to some sources. The expected mileage of around 40 kmpl for the Z-Series engine in test conditions would indeed be a significant improvement over the existing Swift's engine. The current Swift's engine has a certified mileage of 22.38 kmpl with a manual transmission and 22.56 kmpl with AGS (Auto Gear Shift). In the case of the CNG variant, it delivers approximately 30.90 km per kilogram.

More Details

The new Z-Series engine, with one less cylinder, is expected to be lighter than the K-Series unit it replaces. This reduction in weight not only improves the power-to-weight ratio but also contributes to reduced carbon emissions, aligning with Suzuki's Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) goals.

In international markets, the Swift may also receive a 48V strong hybrid powertrain, possibly featuring the 1.4L K14B petrol engine. This hybrid system can enhance fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. However, in the Indian market, it seems the Swift will continue to feature a standard internal combustion engine

More Maruti Cars To Embrace This New Engine?

Suzuki is likely to use the new Z-Series engine in models beyond the Swift, such as Fronx, Baleno, Eeco, and Ignis. The transition from the existing K12 engine to the Z-Series is expected to take place gradually, enhancing performance, fuel efficiency, and emissions standards across various vehicles in Suzuki's lineup.

Verdict

The introduction of Suzuki's new Z-Series engine in the Maruti Swift is a promising development. This lighter and more efficient engine is likely to offer improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions. While initially featured in the fourth-generation Swift, Suzuki's plan to potentially extend its use to other models, replacing the existing K-Series engines, demonstrates a commitment to advancing performance and environmental goals in their lineup.
