Toyota has taken another step in its hybrid journey by introducing a 48-volt mild-hybrid diesel variant of the Land Cruiser Prado in the European market. This new powertrain setup aligns closely with Toyota's recent strategy, which includes similar systems on the Hilux globally and the Fortuner Neo Drive now on sale in India. The mild-hybrid setup is built around Toyota's proven 2.8-litre four-cylinder diesel engine, now enhanced with electric assistance. Unlike the brand's more complex full-hybrid systems, this 48V mild-hybrid architecture is compact and designed to work seamlessly with the existing diesel unit.
The system comprises a motor-generator, a 48V lithium-ion battery (with 13 cells and a 4.3Ah capacity), and a DC-DC converter. The electric motor, which adds up to 16 bhp and 65 Nm of torque during initial acceleration, is mounted high to maintain the SUV's 700mm water-wading capability.
