KTM 390 Adventure: The Most Off-Road-Focused 390 Yet

The KTM 390 Adventure R sits at the top of the 390 Adventure family in terms of off-road capability. Unlike the standard model, which balances touring and mild trail duties, the R variant is clearly engineered for rough terrain and technical riding. KTM has essentially brought components from its international-spec Enduro models into the Adventure platform, creating a bike that demands fewer aftermarket upgrades for serious off-road use. The biggest differentiator is the suspension setup. The 390 Adventure R gets long-travel suspension with 230mm of wheel travel at both the front and rear, a substantial increase over the standard bike's setup. This allows the R to handle deeper pits, rocks, and broken trails with far more confidence.

Complementing the suspension is a 21-inch front and 18-inch rear spoke wheel combination, shod with tube-type Mitas Enduro Trail tyres. This setup is more off-road biased than the regular 21/17-inch arrangement on the standard 390 Adventure, which uses tubeless tyres. The trade-off here is clear: greater trail ability in exchange for some touring convenience. Thanks to the taller suspension and wheel setup, the 390 Adventure R boasts an imposing ground clearance of around 270mm, making it well-suited to challenging terrain. However, this also results in a tall seat height of 870mm, which may be intimidating for shorter riders.
Engine & Electronics: Familiar But Proven

Powering the KTM 390 Adventure R is the same 399cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine seen on the current 390 range. It produces 46hp and 39Nm, paired with a 6-speed gearbox and a bi-directional quickshifter. Performance remains strong and versatile, whether on highways or off-road sections. The electronics package is equally comprehensive where riders get modern rider aids such as ride-by-wire, traction control, cornering ABS and multiple ride modes, ensuring that the bike remains manageable despite its hardcore intent.

Pricing and Bookings
At Rs 3.78 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), the KTM 390 Adventure R is notably cheaper than the standard 390 Adventure with tubeless spoked wheels, which is priced at Rs 3.97 lakh. The lower price is largely due to the R variant using tube-type spoke wheels instead of the more expensive tubeless setup. Bookings are currently open via KTM India's website with a fully refundable token amount.
Verdict
The launch of the KTM 390 Adventure R finally gives Indian riders access to a truly off-road-focused adventure motorcycle without relying on extensive modifications. With long-travel suspension, proper off-road wheels, and proven mechanicals, it fills a long-standing gap in KTM's lineup. While the tall seat height and tube-type tyres may not suit everyone, for serious adventure and trail riders, the 390 Adventure R stands out as one of the most capable ADV offerings in its segment, and arguably the 390 Adventure many enthusiasts have been waiting for.
