  • They rival against Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, MG Astor, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Maruti Grand Vitara
  • Both SUVs are offered with multiple safety features

Skoda Kushaq and VW Taigun recently grabbed 5 stars at the Global NCAP crash test rating. Not only this but they are the only models in their segment to have achieved 5 stars for both adult as well as child occupant protection. They both rival against Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, MG Astor, Maruti Grand Vitara and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder.

Both these cars are manufactured under the India 2.0 Strategy which projects out to make custom make cars of European quality standards to cater to the domestic as well as overseas markets. The recent results from the Global NCAP crash tests not only focus on the build quality of both these cars but also showcases India's manufacturing excellence on a global stage.

Skoda Kushaq and VW Taigun are rich in safety equipment too. They both get six airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, traction control system, multi-collision braking, brake disc wiping, reverse parking sensors, rear parking camera, three-point seatbelt, adjustable headrests for all passengers, hill-hold control, roll-over protection, seat-belt reminder for front seats, speed sensing door locks, a high-speed alert system, electronic differential lock system, tyre-pressure monitoring system and more.

Under the hood, both SUVs get two engine options - 1.0L TSI and 1.5L TSI. The former is the most popular in the Indian market and it churns out 114 bhp of power with a peak torque of 178 Nm. It gets mated to a six-speed manual as standard and a six-speed torque converter automatic as an option.

The more powerful, 1.5-litre, four-cylinder, turbocharged engine belts out a peak power and torque of 148 bhp and 250 Nm. It gets mated to a 6-speed stick shift as standard and a 7-speed DSG as an option.

Commenting on this achievement, Piyush Arora, Managing Director and CEO of `KODA AUTO Volkswagen India said, The Volkswagen Group has always focused on providing the highest level of safety across its model range. Safety has always been central to our R&D process.

The Made-in-India, Made-for-India MQB-A0-IN platform is no exception. It has been internally tested for various impacts and is developed with a key focus on safety. This is an important milestone and a gratifying accomplishment for us, as both our INDIA 2.0 SUV models have achieved the pinnacle of global safety standards.

The design, dimensions, and materials used in the cabin may differ among our car models, but one constant is our rigorous pursuit of keeping the driver and occupants safe in our cars. I am proud and humbled that a prestigious organisation like Global NCAP has acknowledged our efforts, awarding the highest safety ratings for the `KODA KUSHAQ and Volkswagen TAIGUN, especially the never attained level of child safety.

Is the Skoda 1.0 TSI engine reliable?

TSI engines do not enjoy a very good reputation - cases of towing the drive chain, cracking of pistons and burning of oil in the amount of more than 1 liter / 1000 km. There are many indications that Volkswagen has drawn conclusions and created a much better generation of engines.
