What Is Unleaded Fuel?

To put it simply, premium fuels like 91 or 95 octane contain a higher percentage of pure fuel, while the remaining portion includes various additives. In contrast, regular petrol - which is more affordable - now contains 20% ethanol. This ethanol is produced by fermenting sugarcane, corn, and other biomass materials. The Indian government introduced this blend to reduce the country's dependence on imported fossil fuels. To support this shift, many automakers are now tuning their engines to be compatible with E20 fuel, ensuring long-term durability and performance.

High Octane has a better combustion process and is resistant to knocking, which in simple words means the fuel is burning in the right and controlled way. Moreover, these are required in cars with turbo petrol engines, as they have to work a lot, because the exhaust gases are re-entered into the engine through a turbocharger. To add more, it isn't absolutely compulsory to only add high-octane petrol in turbocharged cars, but when you put that oil, the fuel efficiency and overall performance improve by almost 3% to 5%.

Innova Hycross

Toyota Innova Hycross, the premium MPV comes with two powertrain options - one is 2.0L Na Petrol engine and the second one is a 2.0L + Hybrid. Now, Toyota is recommending the usage of RON 95 or RON 91 fuel for both powertrains as it will be more beneficial for the engine and it will run smoothly and last long, plus not affect the catalyic converter, which is the main reason for this upgrade.

Verdict

This advice isn't limited to Toyota Innova Hycross but also applies to its rebadged version - Maruti Invicto. High-octane fuel is also recommended for the Maruti Grand Vitara Strong Hybrid, and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder with a hybrid setup. Also, it isn't the case that if you use normal petrol, the car will get damaged just at the spot, but in the long term, these things can affect the engine as well as the catalytic converter.
