Both Volkswagen and Renault have individual plans to introduce affordable mass-market electric vehicles. Volkswagen is working on the ID 1, while Renault is developing a production version of the revived Twingo concept. Volkswagen Group's CFO, Arno Antlitz, previously expressed the company's commitment to developing an electric vehicle priced around ,20,000 (approximately Rs 18 lakh).

The Volkswagen ID 1 project, which was initially planned to use a new platform, is facing uncertainty, according to reports. Volkswagen Group CEO Oliver Blume mentioned the possibility of producing an entry-level EV by the second half of the decade, but a final decision on the ID 1 project is yet to be made.

New Renault EV in Pipeline

On the other hand, the upcoming Renault Twingo is expected to be in production by 2026 and will be positioned as a budget city EV, primarily for the European market. To keep costs low, the focus will be on efficiency rather than a large battery, with Renault aiming for 6.2 miles per kilowatt-hour. The use of the Renault Group's Ampr Small platform, shared with upcoming models like the Renault 5, Renault 4, and Nissan Micra EV, is expected to contribute to cost reduction through economies of scale. Renault Group chief Luca de Meo hinted at ongoing discussions with potential OEM partners to share development costs for the Twingo.

Next-gen Renault Duster India Launch Confirmed

The official confirmation of the next-generation Renault Duster for the Indian market has been announced, and the SUV is expected to launch in 2025. Alongside the Duster, there is anticipation for a localized version of the Dacia Jogger seven-seater vehicle and two Nissan derivatives based on the Duster and Jogger. This news has sparked excitement among enthusiasts and consumers awaiting the new offerings from the Renault-Nissan alliance.

The next-generation Renault Duster, set to launch in 2025, will feature three global engine options: a 120hp, 1.0-litre turbo-petrol, a 140hp, 1.2-litre petrol hybrid, and a powerful 170hp, 1.3-litre turbo-petrol with flex-fuel compatibility in higher trims. Renault is considering strong hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants for the Indian market to provide efficient alternatives in the absence of a diesel option.

Verdict

Volkswagen and Renault are reportedly in initial talks for a potential partnership to jointly develop an affordable electric vehicle (EV).
