Honda City vs Hyundai Verna, a rivalry as old as the tales of Adam and Eve. Both of them have ruled their segment for several years, and before the introduction of the Skoda Slavia and Volkswagen Virtus, these two mid-size sedans were the default choice for any buyer who wanted a sedan. However, times have changed, and people now see these cars as a secondary option because of the SUV wave.

That said, they are still aspirational and have recently been updated to stay relevant. Hence, this comparison between the two aims to make a clear distinction. Let's begin, and in the meantime, do join our 91Wheels Whatsapp Channel to never miss out on the latest automotive updates.

Honda City vs Hyundai Verna

The Honda City is currently in its 5th-generation second-facelift model, launched on May 22, 2026. The second facelift brings modern changes such as a sharp-looking front end featuring LED DRLs and slimmer LED projector headlamps, neatly integrated into the honeycomb grille.

In a nutshell, it now looks sportier than elegant, and this has been done to attract Gen-Z buyers. Even the alloy wheel design features a full dual-tone finish, while the size remains the same at 16 inches, and the tyre profile also remains unchanged at 185/55.

At the rear, Honda has made several changes to elevate its sporty nature, including blacked-out elements, a more aggressive bumper, and fake diffusers. Talking about the interior, there are several meaningful changes, such as a new 10.1-inch infotainment screen, Type-C charging ports, front ventilated seats, a 360-degree camera feature, and now an 8-speaker sound system.

At its core, nothing has changed. It continues to be offered with a 1.5L i-VTEC engine and a strong hybrid powertrain, more about which is mentioned below.

Verna

Hyundai Motor India updated the Hyundai Verna on March 16, 2026, with minute tweaks to its exterior, making it look classier. The design changes include new LED headlamps, a new grille, a new alloy wheel design, and a revised rear bumper with a silver skid plate, making the car appear more refined and executive.

The interior also received minor but substantial changes, such as a new steering wheel and an infotainment system updated with more features. Additionally, this is the only car in the segment to offer ventilated seats with both cooling and heating functionality. At its core, it is exactly the same, featuring two engines: a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine and a 1.5L turbo-petrol engine.

Out of the two, the Honda City naturally aspirated engine produces more power and even better efficiency. Also, it is more reliable of the two, as the 1.5L i-VTEC is one of the oldest-running engines in the Indian automotive market. The second option is all about low running costs, as this hybrid car runs on three different modes - electric, petrol, and a combination of both.

The fuel-efficiency numbers are simply staggering and this one makes it a go-to car for people looking for high-mileage. Talking Hyundai Verna, it has an edge over City with a 1.5L turbo engine which produces the best ever power figures, and offers a 7-speed DCT gearbox for quick shifts.

Now, the claimed fuel-efficiency numbers aren't out in public, but the Hyundai naturally aspirated engines aren't known for their fuel-efficiency.

In terms of features, both cars offer a plethora of comfort and convenience features, but the Hyundai Verna is miles ahead with features like electrically adjustable front seats, a memory function for the driver's seat, an electronic parking brake with auto-hold, Bose sound mode, and a rear sunshade.

From a safety point of view, it again leads with features like a dashcam and four-disc brakes. The Honda City, after its second facelift, has gotten better, but it still misses out on several features, and even the new additions feel forced and not well integrated with the interior.

For instance, the new 10.1-inch infotainment screen looks aftermarket and does not feel naturally integrated there, which disturbs the aesthetics of the well-laid-out interior. Plus, the quality of the 360-degree parking camera is questionable and does not match the standards of the Honda brand.

Even in 2026, there are no electrically adjustable seats, a fully digital driver's display, or an electronic parking brake, though the latter is only available with the hybrid powertrain, which costs upwards of Rs 20 lakh.

The Hyundai Verna offers one of the widest variant line-ups in the segment, giving buyers multiple options across naturally aspirated and turbo-petrol powertrains. While the lower variants focus on value-for-money pricing, the mid-spec trims strike the best balance between features and affordability.

The turbo variants, especially the DCT models, are ideal for enthusiasts looking for stronger performance and a premium driving experience. Overall, Hyundai has smartly positioned the Verna range to cater to both budget-conscious buyers and feature-focused customers.

Verdict

In conclusion, both the Honda City and Hyundai Verna continue to justify why they have dominated the mid-size sedan segment for years. The Honda City remains the more mature and reliable option, especially with its refined naturally aspirated and hybrid powertrains. However, the Hyundai Verna feels more modern, feature-rich, and better aligned with current market expectations.

From premium comfort features to stronger performance options and aggressive pricing across 22 variants, the Verna simply offers a more complete package in 2026. That said, if long-term reliability and hybrid efficiency matter more, the City still holds its own strongly.
