Honda City Facelift

Honda City

The Honda City lost its crown several years ago, but the past two to three years have been extremely challenging, with sales dropping below 1,000 units per month. One of the major reasons for this is that the City belongs to the sedan segment, which is already a dying breed in India as well as globally. Additionally, it looks rather plain when compared to rivals such as the Volkswagen Virtus and Skoda Slavia, and it also does not offer a turbo-petrol engine. All these factors, along with Honda Cars India losing ground and repeatedly failing to keep up with market trends, are cumulative reasons why this car, which was once India's favourite sedan, has witnessed such a decline.

Honda City

Now, Honda Cars India is bringing another facelift with a new design to make the Honda City look cooler and more in line with its rivals. The latest spy shots reveal a sharper design featuring thinner LED headlights, and it might also get connected LED DRLs, which have become one of the most common features of current times. Additionally, the bumper has been redesigned and now appears edgier. Now, let's wait for May 22 to see it in the flesh. The obvious new additions are expected to include a bigger infotainment screen, as the current 9-inch unit is way smaller than today's touchscreen standards, an updated digital driver's display, and ventilated power-adjustable driver seats

Verdict

The upcoming facelift of the Honda City feels less like a routine update and more like a much-needed attempt by Honda Cars India to keep the City relevant in an increasingly competitive market. While the sedan still carries its legacy of comfort, refinement, and reliability, rivals such as the Volkswagen Virtus and Skoda Slavia have moved the game forward with more aggressive styling, turbo-petrol performance, and feature-rich cabins.

The new sharper design and expected feature additions could finally give the City the modern appeal it has been lacking for years. However, unless Honda also focuses on stronger powertrain options and more aggressive pricing, this facelift alone may not be enough to bring back the dominance the City once enjoyed in the Indian market.
