Kia Sonet
The Kia Sonet, once a segment-defining car, has lost ground amid the wave of rivals like the Skoda Kylaq, the new Hyundai Venue, and others, as buyers now have more - and better - options to choose from. As a result, the Sonet is getting sidelined for not offering anything distinct. It's neither the most spacious, nor the fastest or most fun-to-drive, nor the most fuel-efficient - except for its diesel powertrain.

That said, as per leading automotive media reports, the Sonet is set to receive a major generational update next year, similar to what the Venue received this year. It will move to a new platform - the Hyundai-Kia K1 which is expected to make the car longer, wider, and more stable, while also increasing its chances of securing a 5-star rating in the Bharat NCAP crash tests.

As for the changes, the powertrain options will remain the same - a 1.2L MPi petrol, a 1.0L turbo-petrol, and a 1.5L diesel. The gearbox options are also expected to continue, including a 5-speed manual, 5-speed iMT, and a 7-speed DCT with the turbo engine. Other expected updates include a larger infotainment screen, more Level-2 ADAS features, a new front fascia, increased interior space, and a more striking overall design.

Verdict
With a full generational update slated for 2027, the Kia Sonet has the potential to make a strong comeback in its segment. While the powertrains will remain unchanged, the shift to a new platform, along with improved space, features, and design, could address its current shortcomings. If priced right and backed by better safety, the new Sonet might once again become a top contender in the sub-4 metre SUV space.
