Volkswagen Polo Production Ends With Launch of limited Legend Edition model

After 12 years of production in India, VW India will finally discontinue the Polo badge, with the launch of the limited Legend special edition.

There's no doubt that the VW Polo has been one of the most exciting hatchbacks to launch in India. Not only was it Volkswagens first locally manufactured model at its facility in Chakan, Pune. The Polo was also the first made-in hatchback in its segment to come with dual airbags as standard.  And now to celebrate its 12-year long production in India, VW India has launched the Volkswagen Polo Legend edition, based on the top-spec GT TSI variant.

The 2022 Volkswagen Polo Legend will be manufactured in limited numbers and will be available across 151 dealerships across the country. It is based on the GT TSI-spec model, so the engine remains the same 1.0-liter three-cylinder TSI engine, i.e rated at 109 bhp@ 5,000 RPM and 175 Nm of torque @1,750 RPM. It comes mated to a 6-speed automatic torque converter, with front-wheel drive. Theres also a 1.0-liter MPi naturally aspirated unit available with the standard range of Polo. This unit produces 75 bhp and 95 Nm of torque.

Aesthetically, the VW Polo Legend model stands out with decals on the side body, a blank trunk garnish, and a black roof spoiler for that added sporty look. It also gets a Legend badge on the fender and boot. The rest of the styling elements remain the same including the GT badge on the front grille.

The cabin gets the GT TSI spec as well. It gets a 6.5-inch infotainment touch screen system that supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, cruise control, auto climate control, rain-sensing wipers, and rear AC vents. Aside from the standard airbags, there are also rear parking sensors, ABS with EBD, and hill-hold and hill-start assist.  

Speaking at the occasion of the launch was the Brand Director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars India, Ashish Gupta. He recalled how the Polo badge has been an iconic badge for several enthusiasts, as well, as first-time car buyers and mothers. This is primarily owing to its (Polo) timeless and sporty design, safety, fun-to-drive experience, and strong build quality, he added.
