- VW Tayron spied testing without wraps
- To utilise Volkswagen's 2.0-litre EA888 turbo-petrol engine
- Expected to make India debut via CKD route
Volkswagen's India portfolio might soon see a new flagship addition, as the Volkswagen Tayron, a three-row SUV already on sale in several international markets, has been spotted undisguised on Indian roads. The sighting this time goes without any camoflague and hints at a launch in the near future. With the Tiguan Allspace now discontinued, the Tayron could step in as Volkswagen's new 7-seater offering, positioned above the Tiguan R-Line and potentially rivaling the Skoda Kodiaq, Jeep Meridian, and Toyota Fortuner. Design: Longer, Sportier, & Inspired By The Tiguan R-Line

At the rear, slimmer LED taillamps are connected by a full-width light bar, while wraparound tail lights and a Tayron badge distinguish it from the Tiguan. A previous sighting revealed an 'R' badge near the rearview mirror, suggesting a sportier variant could be in the pipeline. Visually, the Volkswagen Tayron borrows heavily from the Tiguan R-Line but stretches 231 mm longer to accommodate the third row. The SUV features sleek LED headlamps, a gloss-black grille, a mesh-patterned bumper air dam, and 19-inch alloys as spied on a previous sighting.

Built on the MQB EVO platform, the Tayron is expected to share much of its cabin layout and equipment list with the global-spec model. While the India-bound version's interior hasn't been revealed, it could feature a 15-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 10.25-inch all-digital instrument cluster, panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, wireless charging, ventilated and powered front seats, 3-zone climate control, and Level 2 ADAS. Boot space will be a highlight, 345 litres with all seats up, and up to 850 litres with the third row folded.

Powertrain Details
The Tayron will likely use Volkswagen's 2.0-litre EA888 turbo-petrol engine, expected to produce around 204 hp and 320 Nm, paired with a 7-speed DSG gearbox. An AWD system will be offered, enhancing its versatility. However, due to its larger size and weight, performance figures could be slightly milder than the Tiguan R-Line.
If Volkswagen takes the CKD route for India, assembling the Tayron at its Aurangabad plant, pricing could be competitive enough to challenge the Skoda Kodiaq directly. The D1 seven-seater SUV segment in India is relatively small, with only a handful of players. A competitively priced Tayron with VW's signature driving dynamics could find its niche among buyers seeking a premium yet driver-focused 7-seater. It will rival the likes of Toyota Fortuner, Skoda Kodiaq, and others in its class. As for its launch, it is expect by early next year.
Verdict
The Volkswagen Tayron's arrival could fill a gap in the brand's India lineup and finally give it a contender in the premium 7-seater SUV segment. By combining Tiguan-like sophistication with extra space, a modern feature set, and the potential for local assembly, the Tayron has a strong shot at carving out a following. If priced smartly, it could do for Volkswagen what the Kodiaq has done for Skoda, establish a steady foothold in the premium SUV market while offering enthusiasts a well-balanced mix of practicality and engaging dynamics.
