Remember when we told you about how the next-gen Toyota Fortuner and Hilux will be looking in 2024? In the same section, we reported a new powertrain option in the works as well. And now, the same has been confirmed by the Toyota itself. Yes! The mild-Hybrid system is coming to the Fortuner and Hilux. This came after a statement from Toyota South Africa that a hybrid engine is on the cards from 2024 in these 2 SUVs.

Toyota Fortuner, Hilux In Hybrid Soon

We know that Toyota is working on a new hybrid system for quite some time now. The Fortuner is also in the works for a generation update as well. It is going to have significant changes in terms of design, styling, engine, and features on offer. Speaking to the media, Leon Theron, Senior Vice President of Sales & Marketing at Toyota South Africa, confirmed that the two popular models will come with mild hybrid powertrains globally in 2024.

Both these SUVs are currently underpinned by the IMV platform, also shared with the Toyota Innova Crysta. This too is getting an upgrade. Next-gen models will shift to a newer TNGA-F platform that finds itself on other global Toyota SUVs like the Land Cruiser 300 and Lexux LX500d.

The new engine is a diesel mild-hybrid powertrain that is coming with the next-gen models. The new platform is also going to underpin other SUVs from Toyota as it plans to shift to a single architecture. It is possible with the TNGA-F, as it is compatible with a number of permutations and combinations. It comes compatible with different body styles, ICE, and Hybrid models. This will be the go-to platform moving forward. What this helps in achieving is a reduction in cost and also the time spent on development.

While the next-gen Fortuner breaks cover in early 2024 in global markets, we can expect it to arrive here, in India, sometime in mid-late 2024. Along with this, the Hilux pickup is getting its next-gen as well around the same timeline.
