New Maruti WagonR Spotted Testing; Smaller Engine & New Features

Maruti Suzuki's WagonR, one of the longest-running nameplates in India's hatchback space, has been caught on camera undergoing road trials in a heavily wrapped test mule. The sighting points to a mid-life update for the tall-boy hatch, and while the camouflage hides most of the visual story, the real headline seems to be waiting under the hood.

Spy Shots Don't Give Away Much

Whoever wrapped this test car did a thorough job. The silhouette on show is unmistakably WagonR, that boxy, upright stance the model has worn since its debut - but almost every panel is masked, making it hard to pin down exactly what's changed on the outside. The tall roofline, the vertical tail-lamp cluster, and the overall footprint all look carried over from the current car, hinting that Maruti isn't going for a ground-up redesign this time around.

Going by what's visible, this particular mule looks like a mid-tier trim. It's rolling on steel wheels, the ORVMs are bare (turn signals are mounted on the fenders instead), there's no rear wiper, and fog lamp housings are absent too. None of that rules out a richer variant showing up later, but it does suggest the facelift will lean on subtle cosmetic tweaks, a reworked grille, tweaked bumpers, maybe new lighting graphics rather than anything dramatic. The cabin briefly visible in these shots doesn't reveal much either, though a hatchback in this segment nearly always uses a facelift cycle to refresh its equipment sheet.

A Smaller 3-cylinder Engine

What makes this test mule worth talking about isn't what's covered in camouflage, it's what's likely sitting under the bonnet. Maruti Suzuki has been steadily retiring its long-serving 1.2-litre, four-cylinder K-Series petrol motor across its line-up, swapping it out for a newer 1.2-litre three-cylinder unit from the Z-series family, badged Z12E. The Swift and Dzire led this transition, and the recently updated Baleno has since joined the list. WagonR now appears to be next in the queue.

In the Baleno, this three-pot motor is tuned for somewhere around 82-83 PS and roughly 112 Nm of torque figures that are a noticeable step down from what WagonR's existing 1.2-litre four-cylinder makes today, which sits closer to the 90 PS mark. That drop in peak output isn't really the point, though. Every model that has already made this switch has traded some outright grunt for meaningfully better fuel economy, cleaner emissions, and stronger low-end response that's arguably more useful in stop-start city driving than a few extra horses. WagonR would likely follow the same script.

It's worth remembering the current WagonR range isn't a single-engine affair, the base variants run a smaller 1.0-litre, three-cylinder unit, while the higher trims get the bigger 1.2. Whether Maruti keeps that two-engine structure with the Z12E simply replacing the older 1.2, or rethinks the whole engine range while at it, isn't confirmed yet. That detail should become clearer as more prototypes surface or as launch dates approach.

CNG Setup Could See a Rethink Too

WagonR has always been a CNG favourite among fleet and budget-conscious buyers, and that's unlikely to change with the facelift. What might change is how the CNG hardware is packaged. Maruti has recently started fitting some of its CNG models, Brezza being the latest example, with tanks mounted along the underbody instead of sitting inside the boot. If WagonR adopts a similar layout, it would free up a chunk of luggage space that's currently eaten up by the cylinder, which has long been a common complaint with factory-fitted CNG hatchbacks.

That said, nothing in the spy shots directly confirms an underbody tank on this test car, so it remains an educated possibility for now rather than a locked-in feature. Given WagonR's existing CNG variant already returns strong efficiency numbers on paper, any change here would likely be sold more on practicality, extra boot room, than on a big mileage jump.

Features and Trim Lineup

Beyond the powertrain, expect the usual facelift playbook: a refreshed touchscreen unit (possibly a size bump from what's currently offered), updated interior trim, and the sort of safety and convenience additions that keep a model competitive against newer rivals. None of this is confirmed by the test mule itself, since heavy wraps and a mid-spec test unit rarely show off top-end equipment.

WagonR currently spans four trims - LXi, VXi, ZXi, and ZXi Plus, priced from roughly Rs 4.99 lakh to just under Rs 7 lakh, ex-showroom. A revised model, especially one carrying a new engine and possible mechanical changes to the CNG setup, will almost certainly come with a price bump over today's range.

When Could It Arrive?

Going by how visible this testing phase already is, a launch sometime later in 2026 looks like a reasonable bet, though Maruti hasn't put out anything official yet. Until the company drops camouflage and confirms specifications, everything here, the engine swap, the CNG tank layout, the feature additions, stays in the realm of informed speculation built on what's been spotted so far and how Maruti has treated similar updates on other models in its range.
