New Rule By GNCAP Mandates ESC For 2 Stars

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • ESC standard across all variants - New GNCAP update
  • Maruti Victoris, the first car to pass the test with this protocol
  • Side-impact head protection is also now standard

The crash-testing protocol of the Global New Car Assessment Programme (GNCAP) has received a new update, making ESC standard on all variants of cars in order to achieve 2 stars or above. This change has been in full operation since August 2025, and the newly launched Maruti Victoris was the first car to pass the crash test, securing a perfect 5-star rating under this stricter protocol. The new protocol makes ESC a more important and must-have standalone safety feature in all cars to achieve at least 2 stars. Earlier, before August 2025, having ESC in a car meant a rating of 3 stars or more. But from now on, if a vehicle misses out, it will automatically get a 1-star rating. On top of that, GNCAP wants side-impact head protection to become standard in order for a car to be eligible for the pole side-impact test. So, that's the story - and the Maruti Suzuki Victoris is the latest car to pass this test, securing 5 stars and making it one of the safest options in the mid-size SUV segment.

To add more, Global NCAP requires vehicles to comply with pedestrian protection norms as per UN R127 or GTR9 in order to achieve a 2-star rating.

ESC

ESC

Electronic Stability Control (ESC) is a safety system designed to prevent skidding or loss of control, especially during sudden braking or on wet surfaces. It uses sensors to monitor the steering angle, vehicle speed, and other parameters. If an unwanted situation arises and the car begins to skid, ESC activates, applying braking to individual wheels or reducing engine power to help stabilize the vehicle. This is part of other saftey features such as - ABS, EBD, and ESC.

Verdict

Global NCAP is making its rules stricter every year for the safety of drivers and other road users. Thanks to such agencies, manufacturers are now prioritizing safety more than ever. First, ABS became standard, followed by two airbags, then six airbags, rear parking sensors, and now ESC. In the future, we'll see even more safety features.

That said, while cars are becoming increasingly packed with technology, they're also losing some of their charm. Many now have light steering, soft suspension, large screens, and countless sensors to make every ride more comfortable. But some drivers still crave rawness and a true connection with the road - something that's slowly disappearing. Perhaps there should also be a rule to ensure cars remain fun to drive.
