With a starting price of Rs. 28.77 lakh, the base Alturas G4 with 2WD gets quite the refinement in the form of Nappa leather, ventilated seats, and hill start descent control. It is also available with a 4WD configuration with a price tag of Rs. 31, 77,262, and some of the standout features of that model are a Smart tailgate, an electric sunroof, and 9 airbags.
The Isuzu MU-X is quite a hunky-dory SUV that we all keep talking about. This three-row SUV is based on the same body-on-frame chassis that its pick-up counterpart, the Isuzu D-Max V-Cross is based on. The BS6-compliant D-Max MU-X is priced between Rs. 33.23-Rs. 35.19 lakh. It comes equipped with a new 1.9-liter diesel engine that produces 163 Ps and 360 Nm of torque. It comes mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. Both 4X2 and 4X4 variants are available. Some of the top features include a 6-way power-adjustable drivers seat, 7-inch infotainment system, hill descent control, etc.
Next, on our list of the highest ground clearance SUVs in India is with the new generation, modern-looking Mahindra Thar SUV. It comes with both soft-top and hard-top options, Prices start from Rs. 12.78 lakh and tops out at Rs. 15.08 lakh. Both diesel and petrol engine options with automatic and manual transmission options are available. The Thar sits on a body-on-frame platform that gives it the water wading ability of 650 mm, alongside a ground clearance of 226 mm.
The full-size, seven-seater Toyota Fortuner is one proper reckoner in this list. Not only has it been a popular SUV in our market, but its stance and design have also evolved to make it look quite formidable. Prices for Fortuner now start from Rs. 30.72 lakh and goes all the way up to Rs. 42.33 lakh. It is available with both petrol and diesel engines, with MT and AT options as well. The new Toyota Fortuner Legender takes things a notch higher with a refined interior and an even higher price tag.
The Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is available in five variants, of which three are manual variants and 2 get the automatic transmission. Its price starts from Rs. 23.91 lakh and goes all the way up to Rs. 30.00 lakh. Unlike previous generation Pajero. the 2021 Pajero Sport has a monocoque body that sits on a chassis in a ladder frame. This gives this SUV car-like handling on-road and off-road situations. The Pajero Sport competes against the likes of Toyota Fortuner, Mahindra Alturas G4, Ford Endeavour, Isuzu MU-X, etc.
Now, this is one of the most affordable models on our list of highest ground clearance cars in India. The Kia Sonet sub-compact SUV was launched last year in September 2020. It is available with three engines and five transmission options. It competes against the likes of the Vitara Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Ford EcoSport, Tata Nexon, and the Mahindra XUV300 to name a few. The Kia Sonet is based on the Hyundai K-platform, the K2 platform to be more specific. This helps give it a ground clearance of 211 mm, which gives it an edge in its competition.
The Nissan Kicks is based on Dacias MO/Logan platform and its the same platform available with the Renault Duster, as well. In fact, the Kicks also shared the same engine with the Captur. This includes the 1.5-litre K9K diesel motor that produces 110 Ps and 240 Nm of torque and the 1.4-litre H4K petrol engine that produces 104 Ps and 142 Nm of torque. The 210 mm of ground clearance gives it the benefit of trading like a proper off-roader.
For Tata, the Nexon has been a pivotal model. For it was for the first sub-compact SUV from the manufactures. So, they had to make the Nexon hardcore as well and to do that, Tata revised the X1 platform for the Nexon was earlier available with the Indica. Prices for the Nexon start from Rs. 7.92 lakh with the base XE model, and goes all the way up to Rs. 13.24 lakh with the range-topping Nexon XZA Plus.
The new 2021 Force Gurkha is now more modern than before. Starting with its LED headlights, rounded edges, forward-rowed 4-seater, and a new 7-inch infotainment touchscreen system that supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Modern safety equipment like dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, and rear parking sensors are also available with the new 2021 Force Gurkha. However, it has retained the same 2.6-liter diesel engine (90Pss/250Nm) paired to a 5-speed manual and permanent all-wheel drive.
The last car on our list of highest ground clearance SUVs in India is the Renault Duster, which is the only compact SUV available in Renault's stable. It is available in seven variants, and prices start from Rs. 9.85 lakh with the base RXS 1.5. The range-topping RXZ with the 1.3 Turbo engine has a starting ex-showroom price of Rs. 14.25 lakh. The chassis of the Duster is based on the MO Platform, which is applicable with the Dacia SUV, sold in the European market. The ground clearance of 205 mm seems a bit compromised in this list, but this number shouldn't determine its capability to trade the broken roads, untethered.
