Mahindra Thar Gets Steel Wheel As Spare- Images

The Mahindra Thar, a vehicle synonymous with rugged appeal, has seen a quiet but notable change in its top-spec LX trim level starting with June 2025 production. Since its launch, the LX variant, including the Thar LX 1.5L Diesel, has consistently boasted five alloy wheels, four for the road and one for the spare, proudly mounted at the rear. However, recent observations suggest a shift in this offering. The most significant revision is the absence of the rear alloy wheel from the LX trim, which will now come with a steel wheel as a spare. This change comes without any corresponding price revisions, subtly hinting at potential cost-cutting measures by Mahindra. These adjustments arrive just as the first spy shots of a Thar facelift have surfaced, promising subtle design tweaks at the front and, more significantly, a comprehensive upgrade in terms of features and equipment.

Notably, the Mahindra Thar facelift has been spied for the first time ever, and while it will incorporate a lot of new updates, mostly in line with the Thar Roxx, but there will be some distinctions. In a further development for the Mahindra Thar LX, models produced from June 2025 are now being fitted with JK Ranger A/T tyres, marking another shift in the tyre supplier. Historically, the Thar has predominantly used MRF Wanderer A/T tyres, with CEAT CROSSDRIVE A/T tyres also making an appearance since June 2022, and MRF briefly returning around May 2023. This continuous shuffling between brands could be influenced by supply chain dynamics or a concerted effort to manage production costs. While JK Ranger A/T tyres are generally considered more budget-friendly, it could hint at another cost-cutting measure just before the facelift hits showrooms.

Engine Options

Despite these subtle revisions, the Mahindra Thar's underlying appeal and market success remain unshaken. It continues to draw power from its familiar trio of robust engines: the efficient 1.5L Turbo Diesel, the spirited 2.0L Turbo Petrol, and the capable 2.2L Turbo Diesel. Depending on the chosen engine, buyers still have the flexibility to opt for either a manual or automatic gearbox, and select between Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) or the more adventurous 4-Wheel Drive (4WD) configurations.
Verdict
The facelifted model is now making its test runs and while it will share quite a few things with the Roxx, but the cost cutting measures seem to be for the three door variant only. Not just this, the Thar still continues with a strong demand for both the 4WD and the RWD varaints, but if you are looking to own just one vehicle that could fulfil your family needs as well as that adventure bug inside you, the Thar Roxx might be the better pick.
