Mahindra's born electric range has been nothing short of a wonder for the brand as both the Mahindra BE 6 and the XEV 9e models have gained quick traction pretty soon. Now, while the electric vehicles continue their journey, the reports suggest that a hybrid version as a range extender for EV or a tweaked ICE platform with a hybrid powertrain for both models might be a reality soon. Mahindra BE 6, XEV 9e Hybrid Might In Works

In a strategic recalibration, Mahindra is reportedly embarking on an ambitious project to integrate hybrid powertrains across its born electric vehicle lineup, including its dedicated electric INGLO platform. This significant pivot is largely influenced by the Indian government's recent push for hybrid vehicle adoption along with pure EVs, which, through road tax exemptions, aims to bring their running costs on par with electric vehicles in several states. At the heart of this evolving strategy is the thorough re-engineering of the advanced INGLO platform, which underpins Mahindra's 'Born Electric' SUVs like the XEV 9e and BE 6.

For these pure-electric models, Mahindra is exploring a range-extender hybrid setup. Here, a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine won't directly power the wheels. Instead, its sole purpose will be to act as a generator, recharging the battery pack which, in turn, powers the electric motors driving the wheels. This clever system, while not entirely new (having been seen in international models like the BMW i3 Range Extender and Chevrolet Volt), will necessitate both technical and design modifications to the INGLO platform to seamlessly accommodate the internal combustion engine.

Mahindra XUV 3XO Hybrid Soon

However, Mahindra's hybrid ambitions aren't limited to its INGLO-based EVs. The popular subcompact SUV, the XUV 3XO, is also slated for hybridization, but with a different approach. For its ICE models, Mahindra is looking at a more conventional series-parallel hybrid system. In this configuration, the 1.2-litre, three-cylinder, turbo-petrol engine will work in tandem with a robust electric motor and battery. The intelligent system will automatically decide whether to draw power from the engine, run purely on electric mode, or combine both, ensuring optimal efficiency.
Verdict
The two-pronged hybrid strategy simply iterates Mahindra's adaptability to a dynamic market and evolving global policy. By embracing both range-extender and series-parallel hybrid technologies, Mahindra aims to offer a wider spectrum of efficient and environmentally conscious vehicles, leveraging government incentives to make them an even more attractive proposition for Indian consumers. The move could significantly bolster Mahindra's position in the green mobility space, which for now, is more in favour of hybrids rather than a pure EV.
