Mahindra & Mahindra is gearing up for an exciting product offensive in the Indian market over the next couple of years. One of the most talked-about models in this pipeline, the upcoming Mahindra Vision S, has now been spotted undergoing high-altitude testing in Leh. Mahindra Vision S In Leh: High Altitude Testing Underway

Mahindra Vision.S Spotted High-Altitude Testing

The latest spy visuals capture the Mahindra Vision S in full camouflage outside a hotel in Leh, a region known for its demanding terrain and extreme weather. This aligns with Mahindra's established testing philosophy, previously witnessed with models like the Mahindra Thar Roxx, Scorpio N, and others, have all undergone similar Himalayan endurance tests before launch.

While the camouflage conceals most of the design details, some key styling cues are evident. At the front, round headlamps paired with a vertically slatted grille stand out, hinting at a rugged, retro-modern appeal. A visible hood scoop adds a sporty touch, while the boxy silhouette, short rear overhang and upright stance strongly echo the spirit of the Land Rover Defender, a comparison already made during the concept reveal. The side profile also shows flush-fitting door handles and distinctive alloy wheels, reinforcing its modern yet tough persona. At the rear, a tailgate-mounted spare wheel, a familiar Mahindra signature, completes the SUV's butch proportions.

In profile, the Vision S showcased at the event back in August maintains a clean and minimal look. Flush-fitting door handles and camera-based mirrors replace traditional ORVMs, while a set of aero-styled alloy wheels with a five-spoke design add to its modern character. However, you can already see the traditional ORVMs in place of the camera setup. Given its compact footprint, the Vision S is expected to offer a practical but not overly spacious cargo area, indicating it may stick to a five-seat layout, a clear shift away from the larger, seven-seat Mahindra Scorpio family.

Underpinnings & Powertrain Expectations

The upcoming Mahindra Vision S will sit on Mahindra's new NB_IQ multi-energy platform, engineered to support multiple powertrain options including petrol, diesel, hybrid and all-electric. Under the hood, Mahindra is likely to offer the familiar 2.0-litre mStallion turbo-petrol and 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engines, along with a new strong hybrid setup based on a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol unit. The brand is also developing a series hybrid (range-extender) configuration, which could be introduced later. An all-electric version is also expected, possibly sharing its battery tech and powertrain components with the BE6 and XEV 9e platforms.

Mahindra aims to launch the production-ready Vision S by late 2026 or early 2027, positioning it as a rugged, urban-friendly compact SUV with strong off-road DNA. With multiple powertrain options and a focus on modern tech and design, the Vision S will likely compete in the hotly contested mid-size SUV segment, offering something different from the regular choices.

Verdict

The Mahindra Vision S is shaping up to be one of the most significant launches in the brand's upcoming lineup, given the buzz generated with its numerous sightings already. Its combination of muscular design, flexible powertrains and tech-focused interior positions it as a strong contender in the evolving SUV landscape. High-altitude testing in Leh signals that Mahindra is leaving no stone unturned in ensuring the SUV lives up to its promise. However, the compact footprint does leave some anticipation on how big the boot space will be, given a butch vehcile like this is meant to be slogged for longer and farther distances while treading ever-changing terrain across the country.
