Next-Gen Hyundai i20: Interior Design Revealed

The latest spy shots of the next-gen Hyundai i20 provide the first glimpse of the cabin design, which appears heavily inspired by Hyundai's newer models. The dashboard features a curved dual-screen layout, combining the digital instrument cluster and infotainment system into a single panel. A redesigned steering wheel is also visible, possibly featuring Hyundai's Morse-code-style branding that has debuted on the latest Venue. The centre console appears more streamlined, and elements such as the door trims and seat design seem to follow a similar design philosophy to Hyundai's recent SUVs. Feature expectations include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless charging, ambient lighting, connected car technology, drive modes, and a sunroof. Higher variants could also introduce ADAS functions and a 360-degree camera.

While the test mule remains heavily camouflaged, some design details are visible. The next-generation i20 appears to retain its overall silhouette but will likely receive a revised front fascia with new LED headlamps, updated daytime running lights and a redesigned grille. New alloy wheels featuring a dual-tone star pattern are also visible, hinting at a fresh design direction. At the rear, the hatchback appears to feature updated LED tail lamps, a raked rear windscreen and a roof-mounted spoiler with an integrated stop lamp.

Powertrain Expectations

Mechanically, the new-generation i20 is expected to continue with Hyundai's existing petrol engine lineup. The standard version could retain the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine producing around 88 hp and 115 Nm, paired with either a manual gearbox or CVT automatic. Meanwhile, the N Line variant is likely to continue with the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine producing around 120 hp and 172 Nm, offered with manual and dual-clutch transmission options. There is also speculation that Hyundai could introduce a hybrid-assisted powertrain as part of its broader electrification strategy, although this has not been officially confirmed.

The next-generation version will continue competing with models such as the Maruti Baleno, Toyota Glanza and Tata Altroz.

Verdict

Updated Hyundai i20 appears to focus on enhancing technology and interior sophistication while retaining the familiar strengths that have made the hatchback popular. The introduction of a modern digital cockpit, updated styling, and potential hybrid technology could help the model remain competitive in the premium hatchback space. If Hyundai manages to maintain the i20's reputation for refinement and value while adding meaningful feature upgrades, the upcoming generation will keep on with its winning streak. However, with the Verna's update, the brand took a brave step of offering a polarising design, which is something that they could or could not do with this one as well.
